Slow mouse wheel after update

I updated my arch system today for the first time in about a week. When I rebooted and connected my bluetooth mouse again, the scroll wheel became painfully slow.

Before the upgrade, pages would begin to scroll at the first click of the scroll wheel. Now it takes something like 10 clicks before it starts to move. I'm not sure what changed in the update to affect the behavior of the scroll wheel, or, more importantly, what I need to do to reverse that change and go back to the previous behavior.

My mouse is a Logitech MX Master 3, and I use Wayland, and Sway is my compositor. Does anyone know what's wrong or what I need to do to get the previous behavior?

Here is the list of everything that was installed:

Re: Slow mouse wheel after update

Hi,

same mouse (MX anywhere 3), same problem after a full system update last monday.

I compared your updated packages with mine (thanks for the list), and strongly suspected either bluez stuff or the kernel.

Downgraded both and rebooted:

❯ cd /var/cache/pacman/pkg/
 /var/cache/pacman/pkg ❯ sudo pacman -U linux-6.7.6.arch1-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst linux-headers-6.7.6.arch1-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst bluez-utils-5.72-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst bluez-libs-5.72-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst bluez-5.72-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst

My scrolling speed seems OK after that.

Re: Slow mouse wheel after update

OP updated from different kernel, can you pin down bluez?

Re: Slow mouse wheel after update

I can't pin it down yet, but I think it's bluez. Whenever the mouse disconnects due to inactivity, the slow scrolling behavior shows up after reconnecting. I've figured out that if I totally remove the mouse from the saved connections in blueman and then re-pair the device from scratch, the scroll wheel behaves normally.

I've also found that, after the first time I did this forget/re-pair cycle, the mouse no longer reconnects automatically after idle like it used to. I can connect it again through blueman, but the scroll wheel is still slow. I have to explicitly forget the device and then re-pair in order for it to work normally.

It could be the new kernel, but I suspect it's the bluez stuff.

Re: Slow mouse wheel after update

SHould be easy enough to verify by updating the kernel, but keeping bluez down or vv - ideally only one combination will exhibit the bug and allow you to bark up the proper tree about it wink

Re: Slow mouse wheel after update

Yep, that's essentially what I did. I just had to wait for the mouse to disconnect because it was idle for long enough.

I downgraded bluez but left the kernel the same and the problem seems to have gone away. Looks like a bug in the latest version of bluez then.

Re: Slow mouse wheel after update

There's a rebuild w/ https://patchwork.kernel.org/project/bl … gmail.com/ in the pipeline - smells related.
Maybe wait for 5.73-4 (currently in extra-testing) before reporting upstream.

Just in case: read https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Offici … positories before using them.

Re: Slow mouse wheel after update

I just want to share another workaround I found. (same mouse, same issue, started around the same time). When it's acting up, running this seems to restore the original scroll sensitivity.

sudo systemctl disable --now bluetooth; sudo systemctl enable --now bluetooth

Not sure why this works, but things like restarting the mouse, or disconnecting/reconnecting the mouse doesn't work.

Re: Slow mouse wheel after update

5.73-4 is meanwhile in Extra - it does not fix this?
You'll have to fix a bug upstream then, it's not going away wishmagically.

Re: Slow mouse wheel after update

I have the same problem, also with MX Master 3, using bluez-5.73-4

sudo systemctl restart bluetooth

solves the problem, but a bit irritating. Should be the bluez package, yes.

5.73-4 doesn't seem to have effected any change, no. Unfortunately I'm struggling to find where to submit bugs upstream.

Re: Slow mouse wheel after update

Thanks, Seth. It does indeed appear to be Bluez: I downgraded to 5.72-2 earlier and now my mouse works as normal, so I guess I'll file a bug report.

Re: Slow mouse wheel after update

Same problem with Logitech mouse, downgrade helped as described on the wiki:

pacman -U file:///var/cache/pacman/pkg/bluez-5.72-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst
systemctl restart bluetooth.service

Can't find the correct version to downgrade to on https://aur.archlinux.org/. No old versions saved in the cache.
Any suggestions? Thank you!

Same here, I've been restarting bluetooth for a month now after suspend. Downgrading to 5.72-2 resolved it for the moment.

Re: Slow mouse wheel after update

There was a new bluez update yesterday. Version 5.75-1.
Has anyone tried if it works fine with the new version?
