Display signal drops out with fullscreen applications under Wayland

In a Plasma Wayland session, after launching a full screen gameapplication, my monitor behaves as if the display signal is repeatedly being lost and restored. A few seconds after launching a game (or immediately for some games), the monitor will go fully dark (backlight off) as if the signal was lost, then after 5-30 seconds, the OSD on the monitor will flash as if the display signal just connected. The monitor will then display the game for a few seconds, then the cycle will repeat. It is exactly as if I was physically unplugging and plugging in the display cable.

EDIT: I just realized this also happens with any application. F11 for Firefox and Konsole immediately turns the screen dark.

The blackouts also seem to be halting the game during the loading process, not simply losing the display: each time I get a few seconds of display, I can see that the loading progress and splash screens are way behind where they would be during uninterrupted loading in X11.

For some games, the blackout is immediate and the signal never comes back. If I alt-tab to the desktop, the behavior stops. When I alt-tab back to the game, the screen goes dark again.

It seems to be related to full screen mode. When I start Slay the Spire in windowed mode, no problem. When I start it in full screen mode, the issue occurs. The issue is not limited to Steam. When I start Terraria in minigalaxy in windowed mode, no problem. When I switch to fullscreen mode, the screen immediately goes dark.

With X11 this never happened, under Plasma 5 or 6.
Wayland under Plasma 5 & 6: Problem occurs.

When I run Steam from console, no error messages are printed.

This seems to be a VRR issue under Wayland. In Plasma Settings if I set 'Adaptive sync' to Never, the issue does not occur.

thanks! this fixed the same issue i was having

edit: nevermind, youtube is still misbehaving in fullscreen mode, however the F11 on the browser issue got fixed
