Bizarre issue with OpenVPN (or the kernel?)

For the past few days, I have been unable to start my OpenVPN server using systemd.  In order to get it to work, I had to log in as root and start the application manually using the command from the .service file.  Eventually, I tried running the command using the openvpn account to improve security in this less-than-ideal state, but was told the account was not available (mirroring the systemd error).  I deleted the openvpn account, created it again, changed the permissions on /etc files to the new uid, and systemd works again.  Strange.  Maybe the account was corrupted during a reboot?  Any thoughts?
