random freezes, forced to hard shut down

Hello.

my laptop has the following specs:

Thinkpad x61
kernel: 6.8.1-arch1-1
CPU: Intel Core2duo T7300
GPU: (integrated) intel mobile GM965
Using mesa for the drivers and xorg for the environment

I've been experiencing full system freezes for a while. It happens completely randomly; sometimes several times a day, sometimes only once per week. It doesn't seem to be related to system load because it also happens while it's idle. The laptop becomes completely unresponsive so I can't go to the TTY and the only button that works is the power button, so every time it happens I'm forced to shut it down by pressing the button for a couple seconds. As far as I can tell, there is nothing unusual in the system Journal.
I've found several other threads in this forum with people experiencing something similar, but none of the solutions worked for me mostly because it's usually an issue related to nvidia or AMD drivers, but my laptop has integrated graphics. I tried to change the kernel to LTS but nothing changed. I also tried the solutions listed here but the issue persists.
I have windows 7 dualboot and the issue does not happen there so I believe it's not a hardware related problem, must be a software one.

I would appreciate the help.

Re: random freezes, forced to hard shut down

I am not so sure that it is not a hardware error. Your laptop was released 17 years ago, so it most likely needs a bit more voltage than before.

To rule out hardware errors, it wouldn't hurt to stress test your laptop: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Stress_testing

Excuse my poor English.

Enable and try to use the https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Keyboa … el_(SysRq) otherwise you'll find

nothing unusual in the system Journal

because the relevant parts will be lost.

full system freezes for a while

Can you quantify "a while"?

Any chance you're running OOM

xorg for the environment

What WM/DE? Do you also run a compositor (picom)?

Re: random freezes, forced to hard shut down

i'm experiencing a bug which i suspect is on ktorrent which exhaust something on the kernel fs layer and after a day or so running I will get IO errors for everything. cannot even spaw the TTY (i can switch ttys, and things that are running mostly run... but that only gets the ability to move from blank tty back to my now-useless graphical tty.)

if i do happen to have a shell open i just get "IO errors" for everything as the shell cannot even fopen the binaries.

pressing the power button on a blank tty will show "cannot start shutdown binary" or something like that. only long pressing power off resolves this. and obviously, nothing on the logs.

Re: random freezes, forced to hard shut down

If you keep a root shell open and trigger the bug, can you still control the system from the root shell?
(You might be hitting some quota/ulimit or even run out of inodes/space, but the root gets soem exclusive wiggle-room against those)

Can your reboot w/ the magic https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Keyboa … el_(SysRq)
In doubt, keep a terminal running "dmesg -w" in sight when allowing ktorrent to crash your system

@Kasumin, do you also use ktorrent?
@gcb, if the OP doesn't, please report your post to be split into a separate thread, thanks.

Re: random freezes, forced to hard shut down

Enable and try to use the SysRq

Thank you I'll enable it and report back when it freezes again

Can you quantify "a while"?

It's been for a couple months and I've been updating it regularly so it's been happening for at least three previous kernel versions, but I'm not exactly sure.

Any chance you're running OOM

I only have 4gb. In normal use the free command says I'm only using ~1gb so I don't think that is the issue.

What WM/DE? Do you also run a compositor (picom)?

I'm using dwm and picom, yes.

do you also use ktorrent?

I do not.

I've only done a memory test with memtest86+ and it didn't find anything wrong after 15 or so cycles. I'll try the other ones as well.

Re: random freezes, forced to hard shut down

Update:

My system froze today and I tried the REISUB and REISUO sequences but neither worked. The laptop stays frozen and I did activate SysRq following the guide in the wiki. I tired both sequences while the laptop is unfrozen and they worked correctly.

I tried to get the journal after the freeze but I assume nothing relevant was registered because I had to shut it down by force.

Re: random freezes, forced to hard shut down

The laptop stays frozen and I did activate SysRq following the guide in the wiki

Ftr, it's not in the kernel commandline, but if you've added it via a sysctl you should be able to execute it while the system is running fine.

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Kdump - if that fails, it's most likely the HW.
Do you get this (only) on battery or (also) on external supply?

And while W7 didn't have the fast-start nonsense, you're not actively hibernating your windows to run linux, but shut down properly, do you?

Re: random freezes, forced to hard shut down

Do you get this (only) on battery or (also) on external supply?

I got another freeze but this time it was on the external supply with no battery connected so it happens with both.
I tried the REISUB sequence again but no luck. I also installed kdumpst and I do see the

kdumpst: panic kexec loaded successfully

message in the journal so I assume it's installed correctly, however after hard shut off and powering on again, there's only a .img file in the /var/crash/kdumpst/ directory and nothing else, and I don't see the

kdumpst: logs saved in "/var/crash/kdumpst/logs"

message in the journal either.

if that fails, it's most likely the HW.

I still doubt it's hardware related because this doesn't happen under w7

I am shutting it down properly but I didn't check any of the fast-start configuration so if there is something there I'm not aware of, it might have something to do with it.

Has this ever happened w/o picom running?
What's your uptime ratio for win/linux? ("The system freezes every couple of days, this has never happened during the 10 minutes a week where I'm booting windows" is obviously not very reliable data wink)

if there is something there I'm not aware of, it might have something to do with it

MS introduced fast-start (ie. relabled hibernation to simulate fast boots) w/ Win8 only.

Re: random freezes, forced to hard shut down

What's your uptime ratio for win/linux?

I don't really use windows a lot but at least this week that I've been troubleshooting things, the longest it's gone without freezing in linux is ~3h, whereas in windows I used it for aprox. 5h without any issues.

is obviously not very reliable data

you're right so I decided to run some stress tests on windows (couldn't think of anything else to try and force a crash). I ran the stability test in Aida64Extreme for 2h with no issues, then ran the Furmark gpu test for 2h as well with no issues. After that I went back to arch to compile the kernel for kdump but it froze after almost 3h and I believe the stress tests were the same if not more demanding than compiling the kernel, so If not a hardware problem, at least I'm pretty sure it has nothing to do with system load.
By the way, can I use a different pc to compile the kernel? I don't think I will be able to in this one.

Has this ever happened w/o picom running?

I haven't tested that yet. Should I replace it with a different compositor or just go without compositor at all?

Re: random freezes, forced to hard shut down

Yes, but you don't have to compile a kernel, the defdault arch kernels have the necessary flags set.

zgrep -E '(DEBUG_INFO|CRASH_DUMP|PROC_VMCORE)=' /proc/config.gz

just go without compositor at all?

This one, though w/ the windows behavior and

It doesn't seem to be related to system load because it also happens while it's idle.

adding

intel_idle.max_cstate=1 i915.enable_dc=0 ahci.mobile_lpm_policy=1

to the https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Kernel_parameters might be worth a shot, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Intel_ … Intel_CPUs

Re: random freezes, forced to hard shut down

I disabled picom and left it overnight playing random videos and it didn't freeze after almost 12h, after that I enabled picom and it froze after ~1h so maybe it is related. Is there a more direct way to check if it is picom?

intel_idle.max_cstate=1 i915.enable_dc=0 ahci.mobile_lpm_policy=1

I tried the first one and it still froze (with picom enabled), with the other two I can't go past the startx login screen, it just keeps looping.

Re: random freezes, forced to hard shut down

It's not gonna be picom directly but something it triggers in the i915 kernel module, please post your picom.conf (maybe we can isolate the "compromising" feature)

Re: random freezes, forced to hard shut down

Do you have more luck w/ the glx backend (sidestepping the DDX acceleration)
Speaking of which, please post your Xorg log, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Xorg#General

Re: random freezes, forced to hard shut down

So modesetting/glamor.
You *might* be better off w/ xf86-video-intel and mesa-amber (but that needed to be tested)

Re: random freezes, forced to hard shut down

Then should I remove mesa and install those two?
Also I made a custom picom.conf to use glx but I'm getting this error.

$ picom --show-all-xerrors
[ 03/31/2024 18:00:26.972 x_log_error WARN ] X error 167 GLX_BAD_FB_CONFIG request 152 minor 0 serial 306
[ 03/31/2024 18:00:26.973 glx_init ERROR ] Failed to get GLX context.
[ 03/31/2024 18:00:26.974 initialize_backend FATAL ERROR ] Failed to initialize backend, aborting...
[ 03/31/2024 18:00:26.974 draw_callback_impl FATAL ERROR ] Pre-render preparation has failed, exiting...

I just uncommented backend = "glx" and commented # backend = "xrender"; and left everything else intact from the default one.

Re: random freezes, forced to hard shut down

What is the output of "glxinfo -b"?
Installing mesa-amber will replace mesa, don't try to remove the latter. It's dependency for a lot of stuff.

Re: random freezes, forced to hard shut down

I'll install them then

What is the output of "glxinfo -b"?

$ glxinfo -b
bash: glxinfo: command not found

Re: random freezes, forced to hard shut down

Sorry, typo. It's getting very late… "glxinfo -B"
