Set uncommon screen resolution with an Arc 380

I have a monitor with an uncommon resolution (1920x860). When I connect it to the iGPU (Intel Iris Pro II) its native resolution is detected egregiously; however, if I connect it to the GPU (Intel Arc 380) the only resolution provided is 1280x720. I can only connect it via HDMI.

On Wayland the resolution of this trouble is quite impossible at the moment: the edid file of said monitor is wrong (I have neither the skills nor the ability to write about it and I cannot risk damaging the hardware learning or experimenting).

On X11 something is doable thanks to xrandr, but always limited. I can indeed enable 1920x1080, which comes a little close to the native resolution of my screen, but the form factor is wrong (and the screen looks smeared/stretched).

To come to this conclusion I had to make many attempts, but unfortunately after a month I am still with a GPU that cannot set the resolution of my monitor correctly.

I am on Artix Linux Kernel 6.8.2-artix1-1, plasmashell 6.0.2, X11. I am using the i915 driver, properly loaded. Here are some other infos, hope someone could be of some help.

Re: Set uncommon screen resolution with an Arc 380

Interesting Updates:

I tested my monitor with Windows 10 to see if I could get more interesting information, and indeed there were some advances:

Using EnTech Monitor Asset Manager, I got a complete readout of the edid file, and this is where the interesting news popped up: the edid.bin file of my monitor reads:

Native/preferred timing... 1920x860p at 60Hz
    Modeline............... "1920x860" 110,680 1920 1968 2000 2106 860 863 868 876 +hsync +vsync

Standard timings supported
    1280 x 720p at 60Hz - VESA STD

.

So I tried again using the edid.bin file and:

- I put the edid file in /usr/lib/firmware/edid/.
- I set

MODULES=(i915)

and

FILES="/usr/lib/firmware/edid/edid.bin"

in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf. Then ran

mkinitcpio -P

- I put the KMS

drm.edid_firmware=HDMI-1:edid/edid.bin drm.edid_firmware=HDMI-A-1:edid/edid.bin

in the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT of /etc/default/grub. Then clearly run

grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg

(I set the custom edid two times since HDMI-1 is the way X11 identifies my monitor and HDMI-A-1 since it is the way Wayland identifies it).

Now if I check with dmesg there is no error and the edid file is loaded correctly without any problems, as is the i915 module.
The Xorg log is also completely clean and there are no problems. The i915 driver is loaded correctly and the only missing feature (due to my motherboard) is the resizeable BAR, which is not important to solve this problem.

Despite this, on both Wayland and X11 the only resolution that can be set is 1280x720 (always stretched). Using X11 and xrandr I can add the modeline 1920x1080 and use it (maybe because it is Standard) but still everything is stretched since it doesn't respect the screen ratio.

So I tried configuring inside /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf file:

Section "Device"
    Identifier "IntelGraphics"
    Driver "modesetting"
#    Driver "intel"
    Option "AccelMethod" "sna"
    Option "DRI" "iris"
#	Option "DRI" "2"
    Option "CustomEDID" "HDMI-1:/usr/lib/firmware/edid/edid.bin"
    Option "CustomEDID" "HDMI-A-1:/usr/lib/firmware/edid/edid.bin"
    Option "IgnoreEDID" "false"
    Option "UseEDID" "true"
EndSection

.

But despite all this, on both X11 and Wayland the only resolution that can be set is 1280x720.

I tried to user xrandr on X11 to therefore add by hand the modeline specified in the edid file ("1920x860" 110,680 1920 1968 2000 2106 860 863 868 876 +hsync +vsync). Doesn't work.

If I use the Arc 830 it seems that I can only set the Vesa Standard resolution (1280x720) and not the preferred one indicated in the edid file (1920x860). This is so annoying.

I hope someone can help me or can give me further guidance and that this information can be a guide for those in the same situation as me. I would like to do a bug report in regard to this issue, but doesn't know where/who.

ps: if some info or reports are needed please let me know.

Re: Set uncommon screen resolution with an Arc 380

Please post your Xorg log, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Xorg#General and the output of

for OUT in /sys/class/drm/card*; do echo $OUT; edid-decode $OUT/edid; echo "================="; done

You'll need https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/edid-decode-git
when the output is connected to the Arc 830

Your xorg config there is a wild mix ofthe modesetting driver with options that are only available/resonable w/ xf86-video-intel andthe nvidia driver…

Re: Set uncommon screen resolution with an Arc 380

That's not your xorg log, it's a small and irrelevant fraction of it.

card1-HDMI-A-1 shows up w/ the desired mode in DTD1 which "First detailed timing is the preferred timing" is what you should™ be getting there.
There's also a bogus extension block, no idea whether that's gonna throw off X11 or wayland

Re: Set uncommon screen resolution with an Arc 380

[     4.921] Current Operating System: Linux red 6.8.2-artix1-1 #1 SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Wed, 27 Mar 2024 20:16:29 +0000 x86_64

https://bbs.archlinux.org/misc.php?action=rules

It reads the correct edid, finds the 860p modeline but then goes on to

[ 4.971] (II) modeset(0): Printing probed modes for output HDMI-1
[     4.971] (II) modeset(0): Modeline "1280x720"x60.0   74.25  1280 1390 1430 1650  720 725 730 750 +hsync +vsync (45.0 kHz e)
[     4.925] (**) |-->Screen "HDMI-1" (0)
[     4.925] (**) |   |-->Monitor "Monitor0"
[     4.925] (**) |   |-->Device "IntelGraphics"
…
[     4.969] (II) modeset(0): Output HDMI-1 using monitor section Monitor0

might be a problem here, and for some reason we arrive at

[ 5.120] (II) AIGLX: Screen 0 is not DRI2 capable
[ 5.264] (II) IGLX: Loaded and initialized swrast
[ 5.264] (II) GLX: Initialized DRISWRAST GL provider for screen 0

The problem is likely the underlying kernel module.
Clean up your xorg config (remove everything you added there custom) and post your complete system journal for the boot:

sudo journalctl -b | curl -F 'file=@-' 0x0.st

Be prepared that a mod will close this thread anytime they see it.

Re: Set uncommon screen resolution with an Arc 380

I didn't mean to be negligent, I hope the fact that this problem is there has nothing to do with the fact that I have runit and an artix kernel.

So I cannot journalctl, but I can:

# dmesg | curl -F 'file=@-' 0x0.st
http://0x0.st/XzBB.txt

Which contains: https://pastebin.com/2abnHkSq

I thank you deeply for your assistance up to this point.

Re: Set uncommon screen resolution with an Arc 380

Sorry I forgot why Artix exists - plus I'm habitually posting textblocks for this wink

There isn't anything suspicious in the dmesg, maybe add "initcall_blacklist=simpledrm_platform_driver_init" to the https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Kernel_parameters to get that out of the equation.
Did you meanwhile remove your xorg confliglets? What's the impact on the xorg log and situation?

Somewhere in the back of my head there was an over-aggressive modeline filter, but iirc that only applied to the amdgpu driver and has been quite a while
You could still try your luck w/ intel but need to explicitly select the iris DRI.
Do you btw. try to use mesa-amber? Don't.

You could try to set a mode for KMS and maybe get it down to wayland this way, https://www.kernel.org/doc/Documentation/fb/modedb.rst

Re: Set uncommon screen resolution with an Arc 380

Thank you so much for the effort you are dedicating helping me, I owe you a favor.

Added the new KMS, both blacklist simpledrm init and video mode. So now my KMS list is:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet drm.edid_firmware=HDMI-1:edid/edid-l1.bin drm.edid_firmware=HDMI-A-1:edid/edid-l1.bin initcall_blacklist=simpledrm_platform_driver_init video=HDMI-A-1:1920x860@60 video=HDMI-1:1920x860@60"

Here is my dmesg update: https://pastebin.com/MKeX0nJy

Re: Set uncommon screen resolution with an Arc 380

Remove xf86-video-vesa (though I'd not bet on that you don't want to use that driver)
Also xf86-video-fbdev, it looks broken anyway?

Can you switch the resolution after settign the edid after the boot (but before starting any display server), https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Kernel … s_and_EDID ?
Where does that edid file come from? Windows?

Please elaborate on

When I connect it to the iGPU (Intel Iris Pro II) its native resolution is detected egregiously; however, if I connect it to the GPU (Intel Arc 380) the only resolution provided is 1280x720. I can only connect it via HDMI.

There's only one GPU in that system according to dmesg and the xorg log - can you extract the edid from the IIPII system (you can just copy the file from /sys/class/drm) and if you look at it w/ edid-decode, is it less bogus?

Re: Set uncommon screen resolution with an Arc 380

Can you switch the resolution after settign the edid after the boot (but before starting any display server), https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Kernel … s_and_EDID ?

I am not able to switch the resolution before starting any display server. However, while Grub screen gets a 1920x1080 resolution, then the rest of the buffer gets 1024x768 (I know those infos since the monitor tells me the actual resolution and also because I see bigger fonts and stretches).

Yes I am actually forcing the edid via KMS and also through mkinitcpio; using HDMI-1 and HDMI-A-1 both because the first is the way X11 calls my monitor and the second is the way Wayland calls it.

From mkinitcpio.conf:

MODULES=(i915)
FILES="/usr/lib/firmware/edid/edid-l1.bin"

(and then `mkinitcpio -P`).

From /etc/grub:

drm.edid_firmware=HDMI-1:edid/edid-l1.bin drm.edid_firmware=HDMI-A-1:edid/edid-l1.bin

(and then `grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg`).

Where does that edid file come from? Windows?

Yes, I managed to get the complete edid infos (and edid) through Windows 10 using EnTech Monitor Asset Manager. Maybe I could have used the edid.bin I can get from get-edid, but I have got more infor through this software (example: screen size and factory modesetting).

Elaborate on: When I connect it to the iGPU (Intel Iris Pro II) its native resolution is detected egregiously; however, if I connect it to the GPU (Intel Arc 380) the only resolution provided is 1280x720. I can only connect it via HDMI.

Before connecting the Arc 380 GPU I was using the processor internal cpu; since it is an i5 5675c, it has got Iris Pro II graphics. While using those graphics (and no special edid or no configurations) the monitor resolution is perfect, a native 1920x860. If I connect the monitor to the dedicated GPU, the Arc 380, 1720x860 on Wayland (or 1920x1080 added with xrandr on X11) are the only resolutions I can get.

There's only one GPU in that system according to dmesg and the xorg log

True, that is because if I use the dedicated GPU, I set the bios to use only the PCI connected GPU for display; I am doing this to avoid some other messes.

can you extract the edid from the IIPII system (you can just copy the file from /sys/class/drm)

Yes I could, it was my first try extracting an edid file. However it didn't work tho... so I tried the painful thing of getting Windows 10 and extracting the edid with more complete info; infact the first time I got the edid from the IIPII, parsing it through parse-edid I had only a portion of the infos I could get through said Windows software.

Here is the edid.bin I extracted on Linux with Intel Iris Pro II with get-edid:

$ cat edid.bin | parse-edid

Here is the different edid-l1.bin I have got from Windows 10, but parsed through parse-edid on Linux:

I only know about extension blocks of type 02h. PLEASE email me!
Something strange happened. Please contact the author,
Matthew Kern at <pyrophobicman@gmail.com>

(Yes indeed I contacted already Matthew Kern with the interesting infos).

Also, here are the logs I have got now when I loaded the edid.bin (the one I got from the IIPII):
dmesg: https://pastebin.com/raw/nmD37Cia
xorg: https://pastebin.com/LkJvuPt4

And here are the logs I have got after when I loaded the edid-l1.bin (the one got from Windows):
dmesg: https://pastebin.com/m67PH4ee
xorg: https://pastebin.com/wSRyN2yU

(As you can see in both, I followed your suggestions removing unuseful nvidia drivers, the xf86 vesa and the xf86 fbdev.

Still I cannot set the native resolution, but hopefully those infos can get us some news (and hopes) smile

Re: Set uncommon screen resolution with an Arc 380

Don't use parse-edid, it doesn't handle DTDs

Try to install xf86-video-intel and select the iris DRI, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Intel_ … ecent_GPUs
If that accepts the edid modeline it's a bogus filter in the KMS drivers (again)

Re: Set uncommon screen resolution with an Arc 380

Try to install xf86-video-intel and select the iris DRI, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Intel_ … ecent_GPUs
If that accepts the edid modeline it's a bogus filter in the KMS drivers (again)

Did it various times before,but xf86-video-intel gives this error message:

[   517.715] (WW) intel(0): Unknown chipset

I tried with various xorg combinations, but nothing changes; i found also this intel arc a750 on void linux from a year ago which says the same thing about driver intel + arc gives Unknown chipset warning and then some errors.

Also a peek from the note on xf86-video-intel from Arch Wiki: Intel Graphics:

This package is generally not recommended

The xf86-video-intel driver does not have proper support for Gen 11 and newer hardware

Here is one of the xorg log I have got using xf86-video-intel:

And here is the most minimal xorg configuration I used to start the graphic server (I tried different and longer combinations tho):

Addendum: if I connect the Arc 380 to a standard resolution monitor, it works perfectly; the problem is still with uncommon screen resolution (saying it to give most informations I can).

Re: Set uncommon screen resolution with an Arc 380

Ok, so the intel DDX no longer supports your chip (or rather vv wink and the kms driver - great sad

echo 6 | sudo tee /sys/module/drm/parameters/debug
dmesg -w
# replug the output

This is gonna produce a lot of output and will hopefully tell whether and why the drm doesn't like the mode and allow research and complaints on https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/intel/-/issues hmm

Re: Set uncommon screen resolution with an Arc 380

That's just some usb device (the special monitor is some touchscreen) - did you forget to "echo 6 | sudo tee /sys/module/drm/parameters/debug"?
