KDE Plasma 6 takes a few minutes to start

After logging in, the desktop takes approximately 2 minutes to be fully available. I can trigger applications that I have shortcuts for, but any KDE specific stuff (like, Krunner) I can't start until I see the taskbar and wallpaper loading up.

Unmask the service and disable the splash in systemsettings - might be a red herring, this looks dbus-activated and nothing else about ksplash shows up.

Looking at the user jornal for plasma-kcminit.service, I see it has problems starting kcm_fonts.so - but this is the first and only shared library it tries to start:

So after KDE was properly started I opened systemsettings and clicked "Font Management" in "Text & Fonts". It froze, never to unfreeze again.

Removing /usr/share/fonts makes systemsettings' font management load correctly, except that all fonts are replaced by squares in the whole interface, as expected.

Restarted sddm after removing /usr/share/fonts, and KDE still took a long time to start, so it is probably not related to fonts.

It's probably xdg-desktop-portal-kde - but you can't remove that anymore due to interlocked package dependencies…
Do you also have the early xdg-desktop-portal-kde start along the timeout and restart after 90s?

If you blatantly

systemctl --user edit plasma-xdg-desktop-portal-kde.service

and add an

ExecStartPre=/usr/bin/sleep 10

does that slash the delay to 10s?
(nb. that you've to explicitly state the [Group])

Theory being that the service depdens on something that's not present when it gets triggered and it fails, but if we wait a bit, it can just start.
Objective is to figure whether this is the immediate cause tbw.

masking does not solve the problem, but works:

(Because if not, masking the portal service "does not work"  in that sense; of course you can still do that, but it fundamentally breaks everything)

kcminit waits for the kcms to start up.
Next to the portal there's

I don't know why I didn't try this before. You're right, it works fine on X11. That's weird, I was only using wayland before updating.

Well, I still want it to work on wayland, but this is good progress

$ systemd-analyze --user blame   
50.308s plasma-ksplash-ready.service
...

and

$ systemctl --user mask plasma-ksplash.service plasma-ksplash-ready.service

solved the issue.
