HDMI Audio suddenly showing disconnected

EDIT: Sorry, I've decided to reinstall the system. I'm calling the whole process another learning experience and just going again. I'm having fun doing it anyway (I think).

My audio worked last night, but failed this morning when I turned the machine on, and it's still not working.

I've tried everything I can find on Google, Stackoverflow, and these forums.

aplay -l shows:

I know I want to use card 1, but anything I try to change the defaults won't work. I've tried resetting between modifying config files.

alsamixer, pulsemixer, both show the device as unmuted and available. pavucontrol shows it as GM204 High Definition Audio Controller, and the Profile: Digital Stereo (HDMI) Output (unplugged)(unavailable)

I don't know why it would suddenly stop working after a reboot.
