Since some of recent updates, external USB audio card (Roland) stopped streaming sound (been working for years in playback mode).
Same with laptop (similar Arch installation).
Works fine with WIndows (including playback and recording in DAW).
Built-in audio to speakers and bluetooth is OK, the trouble is only with external USB audio...
The device shows in lists and GUI as usual, but doesn't play.
Please help figuring out and solving the problem.

That just means you aren't actively using it. Are you sure analog surround is the correct profile? Can you actively try to play something and post
sudo LC_ALL=C fuser -v /dev/snd/*
LC_ALL=C pactl list sink-inputs
LC_ALL=C pactl list sinks
during that?

VLC music - state IDLE, video is playing back, no sound
Browser, YouTube video - state RUNNING, video is frozen (endless spinner in the middle), no sound

Any messages in dmesg? Is the surround profile correct? Do you not use digital out? when did it seize to work? After a kernel upgrade? can you try reverting that?
Do you not get audio from
speaker-test -c2 -Dhw:2
? The DAC isn't muted with an external control?
