Hi,
since reporting bugs to the Virtualbox bugtracker is a waste of time related to "don't use your distros package", "don't build the modules with dkms", and especially since all Virtualbox 6.1 versions run Windows 11 guests without problems, while no Virtualbox 7 version I ever tested between 2022 and today has ever been able to run a Windows 11 guest without serious problems on my machines, I'm hoping for some workarounds to keep using virtualbox for a while to gain some time to migrate to another VM.
Some information about the settings I'm using. The machine is using an Intel CPU with integrated GPU.
$ hwinfo --cpu | sort -u | grep Model
Model: 6.191.5 "13th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-13100"
$ hwinfo --memory | grep Size
Memory Size: 32 GB
In the past, around 2022, I used another machine with another Intel CPU with integrated GPU.
The current settings are:
"Enable I/O APIC" is checked
"Enable EFI" is checked
"Enable PAE/NX" is checked
"Enable Nested VT-x/AMD-V" is checked
Processors are set to 1 CPU.
"Hyper-V" is selected
"Nested Paging" is checked
"3D Acceleration" is disabled
I already mentioned this on the Arch general mailing list. In addition I should mention that I run Linux 6.8.7-arch1-1 from the repositories.
$ cat /proc/cmdline
BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-linux root=/dev/disk/by-label/m1.archlinux ro threadirqs ibt=off ipv6.disable=1
As already mentioned in my posts on the mailing list, shutting down a Windows 11 guest does not work. In the meantime, I have performed further tests. Another new problem, which has never happened before when using virtualbox 6.1 releases, is that a few minutes ago the licence configuration check of Affinity Photo 2, Designer 2 and Publisher 2 failed and then a reboot of the guest failed, so I had to kill VirtualBoxVM. After restarting the Windows 11 guest, Affinity Photo 2, Designer 2 and Publisher 2 worked again. Maybe it was just a Windows problem happening for the very first time, that never happened 1000 times before, or maybe it's related to virtualbox 7.
For testing purpose I run a 20 minutes Avast snake oil scan without experiencing issues. After that running Affinity Photo 2, Designer 2 and Publisher 2 also worked. However, the shutdown didn't finish again, so I again needed to run pkill VirtualBoxVM.
Regards,
Ralf
