Visual glitches in bspwm and browser

Basically, I've been facing some visual problems in both bspwm and the browser, which are annoying, and some even get in the way. I tried to disable picom, but the bugs still happen.
PC configuration:
   OS: Arch Linux x86_64
   Host: STI Rev. 10/00
   Kernel: 6.8.5-arch1-1
   Uptime: 15 mins
   Packages: 1042 (pacman)
   Shell: zsh 5.9
   Resolution: 1366x768
   WM: bspwm
   Theme: Nordic-darker-v40 [GTK2/3]
   Icons: Papirus-Dark [GTK2/3]
   Terminal: kitty
   CPU: AMD C-70 APU (2) @ 1.000GHz
GPU: AMD ATI Radeon HD 7290
   Memory: 1246MiB / 3370MiB

There are the glitches:
https://ibb.co/n6kV3Sp this bug happens when I open some programs that minimizes in the tray
https://ibb.co/m6G6J9D bugs like that happen in some sites, like Canva

I'm afraid the problem is hardware-related, since it's old. I've seen similar problems in other distros, with glitches in one place or another, especially when I would log in and get that distorted screen with altered colors, but these days the bugs are more frequent. On Windows I don't suffer from any of these problems, maybe it is a problem related to the drivers or kernel, I don't know, I didn't find any information that looks like this.

Re: Visual glitches in bspwm and browser

Please post your Xorg log, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Xorg#General
About the systray: what actually is the systray implementation (what's your panel?)

We need the log file, not the location of the log file

Does it help to remove xf86-video-ati?

i removed the xf86-video-ati package, but those glitches still happen.
I use polybar as my panel.

Re: Visual glitches in bspwm and browser

Please post you polybar config but I heavily suspect that this is because you're using an ARGB window?

xwininfo # then click the bar and post the output

Is the browser glitch exclusive to video content?
What browser, what are its GPU/video settings (try eg. "about:gpu")

The glitches aren't exclusive in video content, I got these bugs on Canva, I was working with images, they happen in other sites too, like, I put my mouse on a bar, and a visual bug appears.
Here's some examples:
https://ibb.co/zhcQ4zv - that happened in another linux forum
https://ibb.co/w6xGw6C - Canva, this bug ocurred when i selected one of the lines above the image on the fourth page, and all the pages got distorted too.

I'm using ungoogled-chromium-bin, I installed it via AUR and I'm utilizing an APU, AMD C-70 APU With Radeon HD Graphics.
Do you want all the content in the about://gpu?

Re: Visual glitches in bspwm and browser

Depth: 32

The polybar window is 32bit and I assume that's the cause of the systray issues - does it end up 24bpp when you start it while picom isn't running?

Do you want all the content in the about://gpu?

First make sure that you're getting the same effects with the fully googled chromium from the repos, then yes and and then try to run it in software mode.
In doubt

export LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=1

and maybe you get away w/

export LIBGL_DRI3_DISABLE=1

I really don't know, how can I see that information?

try to run it in software mode

To run it in that mode, I have to go to the chromium location and use

export LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=1

?

xwininfo, the "Depth" will say "24" in that case.

"killall chromium; LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=1 chromium" should™ do

Re: Visual glitches in bspwm and browser

So, regardless of picom enabled or not, it says Depth=32
trying

killall chromium; LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=1 chromium

just solved all the glitches
But,

export LIBGL_DRI3_DISABLE=1

didn't do anything
Maybe the problem is my APU?

Re: Visual glitches in bspwm and browser

Including the systray?

The systray is just the same, but some icons like steam does not glitch the tray, the only common thing I see in these icons, is that they are completely white, maybe this glitch happens only with colored icons?

Do you get away w/

Unfortunately, no. I'm really worried about all of that being related to the compatibility on my apu, because in software mode everything was just fine.

Re: Visual glitches in bspwm and browser

Re-install xf86-video-ati and see whether exa ./. glamor makes a difference (and use "DRI" "2")
https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/ATI#Driver_options

As for polydock, you could try a theme tat doesn't use transparent colors (to get it to use a 24bit window), but I guess we should first fix the general glitchiness.

Re: Visual glitches in bspwm and browser

Re-install xf86-video-ati and see whether exa ./. glamor makes a difference (and use "DRI" "2")

I re-installed it and created a config file in the X11 folder:

Section "OutputClass"
  Identifier "Radeon"
  MatchDriver "radeon"
  Driver "radeon"
  Option "AccelMethod" "exa"
  Option "DRI" "2"
  Option "TearFree" "off"
  Option "ColorTiling" "off"
  Option "ColorTiling2D" "off"
  Option "ShadowPrimary" "off
EndSection

And again, the bugs still remain, Did I do it right?

Re: Visual glitches in bspwm and browser

The xorg log will tell, but I'm afraid so.
If this happens regardless of driver (radeon/modesetting/exa/glamor) the bug is likely in mesa or the kernel module
Do you have more success if you replace mesa w/ mesa-amber?

Re: Visual glitches in bspwm and browser

I installed mesa-amber, but for some reason my system became really laggy, and it was almost impossible to chromium to run any web page, I even removed the radeon config, but that just made it worse. I think the best option is to know more about the kernel module.

Re: Visual glitches in bspwm and browser

AMD ATI Radeon HD 7290 is actually a northern island chip which requires r600 and thus the regular mesa.
You likely dropped to swrast w/ mesa-amber.
Sorry for that.

Try to add

radeon.aspm=0 radeon.runpm=0 radeon.bapm=0 radeon.audio=0 radeon.fastfb=0

to the https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Kernel_parameters - the first 3 are powersaving related, then audio, thought that should only be relevant for HDMI/DP and finally the best shot but at performance costs.

The parameters are explained in "modinfo radeon"

Re: Visual glitches in bspwm and browser

I created a .conf file called "radeon" in the /etc/modprobe.d/ with these parameters, but it didn't work. Have I done it wrong?

Re: Visual glitches in bspwm and browser

The presented syntax is illegal for modprobe, those are kernel parameters.
If you want to use a modprobe.conf* you'd also have to make sure to rebuild the initramfs to make sure it's available early enough, but for testing purposes I recommend the kernel parameters and just adding them manually at the bootloader (in that case if anything goes wrong, they'll disappear w/ the next reboot automatically)

Re: Visual glitches in bspwm and browser

Is this so far a chromium-limited issue or do you also get the same glitch w/ firefox or falkon?
Or browser-unrelated GL clients from eg. the mesa-demos or xscreensaver hacks or some game?
It's then probably time to look at about:gpu…

Re: Visual glitches in bspwm and browser

For some reason I never realised that trying another browser, it'll reveal some thing. The glitch simply do not exist on Firefox, maybe all of that are just compatibility problems with chromium.
