Startx does not work after kernel upgrade [Solved]

I had 64bit Arch Linux Zen Kernel 6.8.6 working. I have both Intel and Nvidia graphics card. Upgraded to 6.8.7 successfully with no dkms errors and rebooted to find that my gui did not start. Switched to console, logged in and entered startx to find the errors as in the log provided

Initial error was

This is my xinitrc

How do I proceed?

Thank you in advance for your time.

Re: Startx does not work after kernel upgrade [Solved]

[ 224.858] (II) Server terminated successfully (0). Closing log file.

The log does not show any server related issues.

xrandr --setprovideroutputsource modesetting NVIDIA-0
xrandr --auto

Is that the entire contents of ~/.xinitrc?  Was anything else updated at the same time as linux-zen such as python?

That is all I have in the ~/.xinitrc file.

Yes, you are absolutely right; there were lots of python updates alongside the kernel.

What does that mean?

Then I would expect startx to behave as you have described as there is nothing for it to continue to execute after the xrandr calls.

The cause could be similar to https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 3#p2167513

Thank you so much. The similar issue is the one that provided the fix.

So how do I block only and all python updates and still get the kernel upgrades?

Well I first blocked all python updates and got back to the latest kernel upgrade with the same black screen. During this time there was a update to optimus manager which manages Nvidia modules. Then I also updated all the python modules and finally I am back to a healthy system with everything upgraded. Can we just blame the python modules?

No, blame the user who didn't take care of their out-of-repo packages. It's YOUR responsibility to rebuild them when necessary, nobody else's.
