World of Warcraft crashes on login after recent update

After a recent system upgrade (https://gist.github.com/nightkr/341b43f … 727adc721f), World of Warcraft (retail, 10.2.6.54499, running on wine-ge-8-26-x86_64 via Lutris) started crashing after selecting a character to log into. It'd load until around 40%, and then the game window would just close.

I tried downgrading {lib32-,}glibc (in accordance with https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=295323), and it made no difference.

Curiously, after running a Scan&Repair in Battle.net, it has instead started crashing immediately on startup, not even letting me pick a character anymore. All logs of this are in https://gist.github.com/nightkr/fa1a198 … 638cffb0ef (WoW created a bunch of other log files too, but they're all empty).

As a workaround, I've found that installing {lib32-,}amdvlk does work and let the game launch normally, implying a regression somewhere in Mesa/vulkan-radeon.

After some careful bisecting, it looks like the culprit was upgrading linux-zen{,-headers} to 6.8.9.zen1-1. The game runs fine if I run the latest of everything else, but hold back linux-zen{,-headers} to 6.8.8.zen1-1.

This doesn't seem to be exclusive to zen, I see the same difference between linux-6.8.9.arch1-1 (broken) and 6.8.8.arch1-1 (works).

Thanks. I had the same problem with CS2 and Hunt: Showdown. Both crashing upon start. Downgrading to linux-6.8.8 worked.

Wanted to also reply that I also had the same issue and downgrading to 6.8.8 worked for me as well.

I've seen some comments that enabling resizable BAR in your BIOS might mitigate this, can you check that? In any case a kernel bug that's best reported after doing a bisect.

I can confirm that in my original test case resizable BAR was disabled when I experienced the crash.

I enabled resizable bar, installed the new kernel, rebooted, and I do not see the crash anymore! I probably should have always had resizable bar enabled!

Edit: Posting again in response to the reply below that I am also using a 6900XT graphics card.

I'm going to take a shot in the dark and say that this is likely due to AMDGPU issue #3343 ("Bisected: Games crash on 6.9rc-5+/6.8.9+/6.6.30+ if above 4g decoding/resize bar is disabled or not supported")... The current status and more information is available at: https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/amd/-/issues/3343

NOTE: You have to set "Resizable BAR" to "auto" AND set the "CSM Boot" option to "disabled" to get resizable BAR working on ASUS brand motherboards (and likely other types of boards as well). Resizable BAR will not work while the "CSM Boot" option is set to "enabled."

[EDIT 2: Updated the AMDGPU issue title to reflect that the current "linux-lts" kernel is also impacted.]

NOTE: You have to set "Resizable BAR" to "auto" AND set the "CSM Boot" option to "disabled" to get resizable BAR working on ASUS brand motherboards (and likely other types of boards as well). Resizable BAR will not work while the "CSM Boot" option is set to "enabled."

After doing that, my PC can't locate a EFI partition anymore. Looks like I'm stuck on old kernel.

EDIT: I've checked my limine install and it looks like I forgot to add an efi entity via efibootmgr. After adding it and turning on resize bar, games has stop crashing

Wanted to add in that enabling "Resizable BAR" also fixed issues with games crashing for me on the 6.8.9 kernel. In my case the games were "Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare" and "Days Gone".

Fix may be queued for the next stable release.  Awaiting someone to test.

I was having this problem on mainline and zen kernels as well. Booting to LTS kernel was the easiest workaround.

After I saw these forum posts, I converted my BIOS/MBR boot system to UEFI, disabled CSM, and enabled 4G encoding. That was a bit of work, but figured it was time to get off legacy boot. And now I can use zen kernel again in Steam games without crashing.

The patch got backported to LTS, if you were on 6.6.30 you would/should have seen this as well.
