Headache with Chicony Webcam, part 2

The problem has come again.

The laptop is Lenovo S340-14IIL.
The camera is:

~ lsusb | grep -i cam
Bus 001 Device 007: ID 04f2:b61e Chicony Electronics Co., Ltd Integrated Camera

The issue is the following:
About 1-2 years ago, I could use my camera for 10-15 minutes, then the image disappeared.

For last ~6 months, when I try to run something that uses the camera (like Zoom or Skype), the indicator light flashes for a split second. Most of the time I get no image at all, but sometimes I get a partial ghost image that lingers for up to maybe ten seconds before going entirely black. (I took this description from another guy, my problem is totally the same).

My current setup is: linux-lts + xorg-server + herbsluftwm + alsa + google-chrome

What I see in journal:

I have tried the following, nothing helped:
- switch to linux-lts back and forth
- test camera both in Chrome/Cheese and Firefox
- both with xdg-desktop-portal (+/- gtk backend) and without it
- switch from pipewire to plain ALSA

Two people reporting the same problem, no one could help them.
https://askubuntu.com/questions/1476195 … a-crashing

Many people reporting the same bug on Linux (the link of the very similar case to mine):

Any help is appreciated.

Seems the flicker is back?

The disconnects have nothing to do w/ some userspace stack (wireplumber, your browser etc.)
Does this only happen on battery or also on external power supply?

B/c of "zoom or skype", do you use wifi or bluetooth at the time?
Can you try w/o either?

I do not use bluetooth. I use wifi only (have no ethernet). I tried 4 possible combinations of wifi and power supply, camera seems to not work anyway.

Re: Headache with Chicony Webcam, part 2

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Power_ … utosuspend ?
Adding "usbcore.autosuspend=-1" to the https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Kernel_parameters will disable that globally but the kernel setting can and will be overridden by power maangement tools like TLP at runtime and therefore has to be configured there (as well).

Unfortunately, no success so far.

After changing kernel parameter and rebooting:

~ cat /sys/module/usbcore/parameters/autosuspend
-1

As always, trying to access the camera instantly prints the following:

Re: Headache with Chicony Webcam, part 2

Please post your complete system journal for a boot covering the flicker:

sudo journalctl -b | curl -F 'file=@-' 0x0.st

I don't think we've  ever seen it in context.

Since the camera is probably in the output slate of a clamshell… does the hinge position (ie. how far the display is opened) have any impact on the situation?
(Might just be loose/broken connection…)

Re: Headache with Chicony Webcam, part 2

I tried different positions of camera

is this an external camera?

The camera goes up and down 9 times in 2 minutes,  5 times in the last 30s …

When you tested w/o wifi, did you also rfkill the radio or just disconnect from the AP?

And as a cross test, does the camara work on some live distro… or windows?
