hp laptop with ALC285 output switching stopped working

I have an HP laptop with this sound card:

>cat /sys/bus/pci/devices/0000:05:00.6/hdaudioC1D0/chip_name
ALC285

after a recent update, the audio stopped automatically switching from speaker mode to headphone mode. This means that whenever i plug in headphones, the audio stays on the speakers. The headphone output is still visible on alsamixer.
