Buffer I/O error on my cdrom

Hello, I just installed Arch Linux using the 0.8 beta 1 install CD, but when I start ripping CDs by abcde in Arch I got following message:

Couldn't disable kernel command translation layer

Here is a output of cdparanoia:

[alex@myhost ~]$ cdparanoia -vsQ
cdparanoia III release 9.8 (March 23, 2001)

                ioctl device: /dev/sr0

        SG interface version 3.5.34; OK.

Checking for SCSI emulation...
Drive is ATAPI (using SCSI host adaptor emulation)
Couldn't disable kernel command translation layer

Although abcde shows this message when ripping CDs, it can still rip the CDs without problem.
But I haven't got this message in Gentoo or Ubuntu, is there anyway to fix this?
Many thanks!

Re: Buffer I/O error on my cdrom

Are you sure your drive is connected properly (ribbon cable is OK?)?

I had mysterious problems with my DVD-RW - they disappeared when I changed the ribbon cable.

Just an idea.

Re: Buffer I/O error on my cdrom

Thank for your reply smile
It shouldn't related to the connection of the drive because it works normally in other distro on the same machine.
I can read cd/dvd in Arch but I cannot burn cd/dvd using k3b,graveman or gnomebaker, they show the error may cause by buffer underrun.
But if I use cdrecord to burn cd/dvd it works...

Re: Buffer I/O error on my cdrom

I have the exact same error I/O error at boot if I boot with a cd in the drive (even an audio one).  I believe it started with the switch to pata a couple of months ago.  Are you using the pata hook in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf?  I have 2 IDE cdrom drives (1 cd, 1 dvd) and I am have an intel chipset.

I also see the message from cdparanoia but some googling seemed to indicate that it was not a problem.  Here is some info: http://www.ussg.iu.edu/hypermail/linux/ … /0349.html

Are you seeing slow I/O on your cd's and usb devices?  On my machine, doing a cddb query of an audio cd is painfully slow.  Sorry I don't have any help to offer, but I am surprised that this is the first mention of the problem here on the forums.  Perhaps it is unique to us due to something about our setup.  If anyone some insight on the slow I/O I would much appreciate any help.

Re: Buffer I/O error on my cdrom

Hi PeteMo, thanks for your link.
As I remember I don't got this message when I used the version 7.2 CD to install Arch few months ago.
So may be this problem is causing by the new kernel or new driver?

The modules and hooks sections of my mkinitcpio.conf:

MODULES="pata_via ata_generic"
HOOKS="base udev autodetect pata scsi sata usbinput keymap filesystems"

lspci:

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV40.2 [GeForce 6800 LE] (rev a1)

My cdrom is an ide device but I can burn up to 32x with no problem using cdrecord, but if I use other GUI program like k3b it can't burn.
I already add my user id in optical group.
Also I got normal speed (2x MB/s) when I using my usb 2.0 external harddisk.

I think your slow cddb query may be due to slow internet connection?

No, the internet connection is fine - I think it is because it requires the drive to perform I/O operations.

Well, in my case Arch usually burnt coasters, but there was no problem in WinXP. Distro to distro is a bit different story, but it's always worth double-checking anyway.

Re: Buffer I/O error on my cdrom

I get boot time Buffer I/O errors when I have a disc in the drive, even with a sata dvd burner...

Either way, everything seems to be normal otherwise.

This problem is a real downer for my freevo box. sad
I would _seriously_ want to resolve this issue, so if you have any suggestions, please name them...

Re: Buffer I/O error on my cdrom

Today i faced the same problem. I tried to rip some new CDs with abcde using cdparanoia and lame. Because of the tons of messages in the logs the system freezes but the rip continued until it was done. But after all i had to reset my pc.

May 20 10:52:03 mephisto program cdparanoia not setting count and/or reply_len p
roperly

Lots and lots of messages like this..

I found out that this is somehow a "common" problem - at least it appears on google but there is no real fix - only messing around with the kernel sources may help..
