Which method is easiest/best to get programs to play sound. Same time

Okey first of all sorry for the strange building (can I say it this way?) of the topic.

Well atm I'm using aoss to make programs play sound at the same time but it wont work with Enemy Territory for example.

Which of the methods here: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/All … .28free.29
would you recomend as the easiest and/or best?

Last time I tried oss 4 it wouldn't play sounds in Enemy Territory whilst also running TeamSpeak or Skype but maybe this is fixed now?

I also tried alsa with oss2jack but I was unable to get it running, mostly lack of Linux knowledge from my part I guess.

Well which do you prefer/use and why?
Was your way easy?

dmix, using iphitus's asound.conf.. Doesn't work with Wine though, because Wine is stupid and tries to access the hardware directly or something.

(Some people swear by JACK, which should work with Wine, but I've never gotten it work properly, and don't really need realtime. And ESD just sucks.)

the new on .. v4 released not to long ago, seemed to have fixed all the failings in performance and incontestabilities so i personally think it's passed alsa now ... since alsa sucks at emulating oss.

Re: Which method is easiest/best to get programs to play sound. Same time

I fixed mixing stuff by banning OSS compatibility modules. Now i see when programs try to use OSS and fix them to use alsa, then dmix finishes job automagically

Re: Which method is easiest/best to get programs to play sound. Same time

Ive tried ossxmix and tried stopping the mic but it enables itself at once :S
The problem is that the mic is constantly recording every thing and putting it in my ears... It's driving me nuts tongue
Probably I've just missed a button like disable mic or so but I cant find it hmm

Re: Which method is easiest/best to get programs to play sound. Same time

u need to chane the input gain, it will reduce the noise effect .
i dunno if thre is an option in ossxmix, but in thte gnome sound manager thing, app it is available.
i don't use ther wm so i don't know hw else to set it.
btw, input gain is not the same as mic input volume .. there is another option.

http://www.archlinux.org/packages/5579/ |

pacman -S gnome-volume-manager

Re: Which method is easiest/best to get programs to play sound. Same time

Yeah I saw that it's another option. But I can set the volume that's not the problem the problem is that it's capturing the mic sound even though I have no active programs :S It didn't do this in alsa. (there were an option in alsa for this)

Another thing, how have you set up your /etc/modprobe.conf ?

best method is to use a soundcard that supports hardware-mixing! i'm using a audigy2zs + alsa and i have no problems with any sounds.

sorry for my bad english smile

Re: Which method is easiest/best to get programs to play sound. Same time

options vmix vmix_instances=2 vmix1_numoutputs=16 vmix1_numloops=0
============================
are you referring to noise on the mic input/channel ? cos if it is as i thought, then it can be turned down/off in the volume settings.
you jsut gotta play with them a bit.

Re: Which method is easiest/best to get programs to play sound. Same time

fyi:

flash-plugin has no oss support by default, ou'll need to install libflashsupport.
it doesn't seem to be in the repos, cos someone flagged it out of date.

i posted the pkgbuild~ http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=29655 @ the bottom of the page.
i didn't bother changing version or anything, just the depends (fp-beta>fp)

I second that. Best and easiest. Heck, you can find a decent card that supports hardware mixing for like $5-$50 used depending on what you wanted.
