i3 not accessible

I installed the i3 package through pacman, but it will not show up as an option when logging in. I still only have the options GNOME and GNOME Classic.

What is xinit exactly, never heard of it?

Yes, you need to install xorg-server if you want to run an Xorg window manager.  You should not need xinit if you are using a display manager.  If you want to know what it is, read the wiki.
