OpenOffice Blank Widgets

I recently clean installed 0.8 voodoo beta. I had 0.7.2 previously on which I installed openoffice with pacman no probs, like most things in arch, it just worked. When I installed oo this time with 0.8 I have this very strange problem whereby the initial window for setting up oo appears, you can see a the window outline and a slider on the side and when you hover the mouse over certain places the shape of a button highlighted can be seen but there is no text and no file menu or actual buttons or anything. So after reading this wiki page on installing open office:

http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/OpenOffice

I started oo as root and everything worked just fine. So I tried to start oo again not as root and bluffed my way through the initial setup (after familiarising myself with the setup procedure as root) but even when oo writer appeared it was the same. only the window outline, no buttons or text etc.

I should also point out that despite the fact that I DO have jre installed, the installation of oo always complains of not being able to find a jre as per the bug reported in the wiki above i.e

when oo is installing i get an error message something like:
error javaldx: Could not find a Java Runtime Environment

Any suggestions anyone?
