Re: Plethora of issues on a MacBook7,1

update post: I've now set all the kernel parameters via the grub configuration file (that is "/etc/default/grub") and here are the results plus all xorg logs:

  • nomodeset - blackout, fetched log over archiso

  • nvidia_drm.modeset=1 - stuck over tty, fetched locally

  • both - blackout, fetched over archiso

here are the logs:

Re: Plethora of issues on a MacBook7,1

a small problem with that... "lshw" is either a command that doesn't exist in Arch, or it was removed from Linux in general. the tutorial actually seemed legit for what it is.

Though you could get the same information using lspci

Re: Plethora of issues on a MacBook7,1

No? It's a completely different tool with different scope and will also print a different output format - it will just allow you to see the device along it's bus id

Re: Plethora of issues on a MacBook7,1

I have news!

  • 3D acceleration works! Ri-li and ClassiCube were able to launch.

  • Firefox still has a black border around it.

  • no brightness, but I saw that the AskUbuntu link you sent also has a brightness fix for it in another link.

the "brightness fix" has bricked KDE Plasma and it doesn't start now. I do get into SDDM but after that, nothing. Can't even switch to a tty, it blacks out and I can only switch back to SDDM. I'll make a copy of the Xorg log and send it, but I'll remove the brightness control file for now.

and it has gotten worse. KDE loads now, but it took  a hot minute and I don't have any ability to right click on the desktop, and my wallpaper is gone.

Not only that, but whenever the cursor is in a program, it is more Mac/90's X11-like, but when it is hovering over the "void' of a desktop, it becomes the cursor I set in KDE's system settings (Oxygen Zion).

from a wild guess, I rebooted. it is now back to how it was, except the cursor issue. and System Settings don't launch, only having the window decor appear but nothing else, it mirrors what was under it (i.e., the desktop or Firefox), and it doesn't do anything else. other Qt apps like Dolphin or KPat do work, and it only seems to be the desktop.

Good news! the laptop now goes to sleep. Closing the lid turns off the apple on the back, and lifting the lid now shows me the KDE lock screen (not SDDM) and I can log back in.

Re: Plethora of issues on a MacBook7,1

Run systemsettings from an interactive shell and see whether it hurls error messages at you.
Are there other open issues?

Re: Plethora of issues on a MacBook7,1

primary, more important: Firefox still has the black border, and brightness.

secondary, less important: GRUB not showing

Re: Plethora of issues on a MacBook7,1

For FF open a new issue, link a screenshot to give an idea what's actually going on.
wrt. "brightness" I assume you mean the backlight?
https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/nvidia-bl-dkms and wrt https://askubuntu.com/questions/76081/b … dia-driver what *exactly* did you actually do there?

Edit:

loginctl session-staus
echo $XAUTHORITY

And in case: don't try to sudo that!

Re: Plethora of issues on a MacBook7,1

I have the backlight package installed, and running the file caused KDE to blackout. by "blackout" I mean that SDDM started fine and KDE was showing signs of loading, but after that, nothing. just a black screen, and I couldn't even switch to another tty to copy the Xorg log.

Once we're done with all this, I'll start a new issue for FF.

further explanation of the backlight blackout:

  • copied the code I'll put at the bottom and modified "Quadro K1000M" to "GeForce 320M" to match what I have

  • saved the file to "/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-nvidia-brightness.conf" as said in the guide

  • rebooted the system

  • logged into KDE through SDDM as always

  • default KDE loading screen, as I didn't bother changing that yet

  • backlight turns off with the apple on the back, pressing FN+Ctrl+Alt+F5 to get to tty5 does nothing

  • no other keys but the power key do nothing

the code:

Section "Device"
    Identifier "Device0"
    Driver "nvidia"
    VendorName "NVIDIA Corporation"
BoardName "Quadro K1000M" # swapped for "GeForce 320M"
    Option "RegistryDwords" "EnableBrightnessControl=1"
EndSection

update: the loginctl and XAuth stuff

Re: Plethora of issues on a MacBook7,1

Running what file?
https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/nvidia-bl-dkms is supposed to provide a kernel module that exposes the backlight into sysfs

lsmod | grep nvida_bl
stat /sys/class/backlight/nvidia_backlight

Also, if anything, you'd want to inject "Option "RegistryDwords" "EnableBrightnessControl=1"" into the config we had previously added or, assuming that's actually no longer required, the one provided by the nvidia-340xx-utils package (you can copy it to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d and edit it there to not have it overwritten with an update)

Re: Plethora of issues on a MacBook7,1

lsmod returns nothing, and stat said that the file/directory doesn't exist.

I'm not sure if my config file that's at "etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-nvidia.conf" is the one powering all this, or if it is something else, I am simply too afraid to mess up and have to go back a step.

Re: Plethora of issues on a MacBook7,1

Post your xorg log - it tells what'd driving what.
Also

modinfo nvidia_bl
dkms status

You've a proper KDE session, SDDM sets a custom XAUTHORITY location, but that looks plausible.
Looks like that's a red herring and the problem is https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=482430 resp. https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=477854#c6
Ther backtrace in the latter has kwin running on the software rasterizer…

I couldn't quite get what you're on about, but here's the modinfo and dkms status

Re: Plethora of issues on a MacBook7,1

You didn't build the nvida-bl module or the build failed.
Try to rebuild it and pay attention to errors.

"qdbus org.kde.KWin /KWin supportInformation" will print kwin's perspective on your opengl stack - it's suspicious that the matching bug reports on systemsettings operate on software GL.
Can you run systemsettings when logging into a fresh user account?

Re: Plethora of issues on a MacBook7,1

for the backlight - I'll rebuild using the monolith, last time I did it locally.

about this - the only AUR package I found was for the standard Linux kernel, and couldn't find anything for the LTS kernel. what should I do?

the qdbus command does not exist. either a typo from your end or I am not supposed to run it in a console.

update: so I made a user and called it "nuhuh" (yes, very original) and it has the same output of what happens when I run systemsettings from the console:

[nuhuh@sevencommaone ~]$ systemsettings
failed to create drawable
failed to create drawable
failed to create drawable
failed to create drawable

after that, it just creates the window frame and nothing else.

Re: Plethora of issues on a MacBook7,1

* There's no notification for edits - ideally don't post to post that you're gonna pasrt the information later.
* qdbus is shipped w/ qt5-tools and qt6-tools
* dkms isn't bound to a specific kernel, that's the whole point of dkms

Re: Plethora of issues on a MacBook7,1

Sorry for the AWOL, but qdbus simply does not exist in my system. all it says is "command not found". unless it's not a terminal program that needs another way to activate it, I am somewhat lost on what to do.

update, turns out it's called "qdbus6" on my system, the log as asked:

Looks as you'd expect/want.
Does

QT_OPENGL=software QT_QUICK_BACKEND=software systemsettings

work?

Re: Plethora of issues on a MacBook7,1

It does, only reporting "failed to create drawable" once, and I was able to access System Settings.

Re: Plethora of issues on a MacBook7,1

The QSG will make unconditional use of GL extensions your GPU/driver doesn't provide.
If you encounter more of those issues you can generally circumvent it by forcing software GL for the particular client, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/NVIDIA … oftware_GL
(Obviously you're not gonna be able to run superturboturkeypuncher³ this way)

Did you manage to compile the nvidia-bl module?
