Plethora of issues on a MacBook7,1

Trying to use my old MacBook7,1 (mid-2010) while my starrybook is out of commission due to WiFi card issues (botched upgrade, don't ask), and I have a few problems, the brightness being the main issue:

  • no proper brightness control

  • laggy as heck

  • HOT (not the Israeli ISP, temperature-wise)

  • battery reports at 112% in neofetch

  • doesn't sleep properly, instead just "dies" as soon as the screen closes

  • (NEW!) doesn't connect to 5GHz networks (the local network chip does support it and it had 0 issues on MacOS) it has magically fixed itself

Running on the default Linux kernel with KDE Plasma for desktop environment.

CPU: Core 2 Duo P8600
GPU: GeForce 320M using prop. drivers
RAM: 8GB DDR3 (and 8GB swap partition)

note: MacOS is gone from the MacBook, used to have OS X Mavericks.

Re: Plethora of issues on a MacBook7,1

The battery is probably the age - those values are guesstimates by the battery and in coparism to the last full charge - the maximum capacity can go up at times but is probably already really low compared to the original value.

Check powertop for the energy demand and "sensors " for the measured heat and the status of the fans.

You're aware that for a tesla chip you're gonna need https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/nvidia-340xx-dkms/ ?
"lspci -k", I'd not be surprised if you're running on software emulation and the kde compositor is causing "laggy as heck", lack of backlight control and CPU load and heat because of that…

The wakeup condition might be a regression because of systemd 256, https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 4#p2179104

gotcha, here's what I'm currently going to do:

  • try and install the Nvidia-340 package (currently has the 550 driver from the default Nvidia drivers package)

  • install and check powertop (unless its already present, then just check it)

  • follow the tips at the link you sent for suspension failure

Update (Nvidia-wise): the Nvidia-340 package is not installing, as it's conflicting with the already installed Nvidia package.
Update (not suspending): the files already exist with all the text, one to one, as in the link.
Update (powertop): installed, and nothing really seemed out of the ordinary.

Update (Nvidia-wise): the Nvidia-340 package is not installing, as it's conflicting with the already installed Nvidia package.

Please don't paraphrase, https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=57855
The packages should simply replace the nvidia packages (you get asked about the conflict and whether you want to remove the latter)

Please post your Xorg log, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Xorg#General

there isn't much CPU usage in htop, but the most intensive stuff mostly comes from Xorg and kwin_x11

Re: Plethora of issues on a MacBook7,1

Ok, you want the nvidia-340xx-dkms package or use nouveau nevertheless.
Installing the 550xx nvidia drivers won't help you at all.

Re: Plethora of issues on a MacBook7,1

I had installed the 550xx drivers when I had installed Arch, not knowing I had an incompatible GPU.

I'll try to install the 340xx drivers again, and I'll send any updates here.

here's everything that happens during the installation:

Even after confirming to remove nvidia-utils, it still won't do it. Anything possible or do I have to re-install Arch? not an issue, just wondering.

Re: Plethora of issues on a MacBook7,1

Don't use yay…
You can also just

pacman -Rs nvidia nvidia-utils

and then install the 340xx packages.

alright, here's what I'm going to do:

  • remove the current stuff using the command you provided

  • download it from the AUR using git

  • use MAKEPKG and hope for the best

update on that: it all successfully installed, and I had rebooted to the same old, no brightness control. Oh, and it has now developed a dark border only around Firefox, and KDE apps don't have it.
Otherwise, neofetch runs faster.

does it have something to do with the mkinitcpio? I still have the old Nvidia hook set there.

No, what does the updated xorg log look like?

it has now developed a dark border only around Firefox, and KDE apps don't have it.

And what does that look like (please link a screenshot, don't embed it)?

qdbus org.kde.KWin/ KWin supportInformation

Then let's see whether any backlight device gets exposed to the system

ls -R /sys/class/backlight/

Re: Plethora of issues on a MacBook7,1

Nothing has changed in that xorg log - you probably don't have the linux-headers package so the dkms module wasn't actually built?

Re: Plethora of issues on a MacBook7,1

the linux-headers package is present, and it matches the kernel version, 6.9.5.arch1-1.

Also, after using it a bit off the battery, it now reports a full battery at 54%. It seems to work fine, might just be KDE doing its own thing.

Re: Plethora of issues on a MacBook7,1

nvidia loads hmm
Enable https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/NVIDIA … de_setting - use the "nvidia_drm.modeset=1" kernel parameter (modprobe.conf won't do!) - this will block the simpledrm device, be prepared that your GUI might not start at all with this.

Sidebar: disable iwd, follow https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Networ … Fi_backend if you want to use it as NM backend.

I have no idea how to enable that kernel parameter, and disabling iwd just killed my internet connection.

also, KDE suggests that I should install the power-profiles-daemon, should I?

I'm not currently home, and I can actually damage the install and disable the graphics.

NetworkManager is enabled and running.

Also, which line in

/etc/default/grub

am I supposed to put said module in?

Re: Plethora of issues on a MacBook7,1

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Kernel_parameters
nb. that editing /etc/default/grub doesn't do anything before running grub-mkconfig.
Rather add the parameter at the bootloader (press "e"), this way you just need to reboot if the GUI no longer loads.

Then provide a journal covering the network situation w/ iwd disbaled.
As mentioned, you can use iwd as NM backend, but you must not run it next to NM

I have to note:

shutting off iwd fully disables my WiFi connections, and NetworkManager does nothing.

I can't see GRUB, I just know when to tap enter to boot Arch. Why? Because Apple, screw you, be blind until it actually boots the kernel. I couldn't install rEFInd, because once again, Apple device, screw you.

Actually, I have an idea, that'll I'll preform once I'm home: I'll just copy everything one-to-one using the monolith's GRUB, then copy the same actions on the sevencommaone.

here's an explanation of everything I've done so far:

  • got home

  • set the

    nvidia_drm.modeset=1

    parameter under

    /etc/default/grub
  • ran grub-mkconfig

  • rebooted

  • got into the loading screen (I don't have the quiet boot flag enabled)

  • switched to another tty terminal

  • reset to how it was

  • rebooted again

  • now its back as usual, currently sitting in SDDM

http://0x0.st/XAOc.txt I have disabled iwd, all I had to do was reboot after disabling and removing iwd, now my WiFi runs from NM. writing this from the monolith.

Do you have more luck w/ the LTS kernel (and linux-lts-headers for the dkms)?
