[SOLVED] Cannot change display mode on eDP-1 with intel and nvidia

For something like 3 years now, I've been unable to change the resolution on the built-in display of my laptop, a 2021 Dell G7. Curiously, external displays like monitors and TVs have been able to change resolution without any issues. As of now, packages in all official repositories are up to date, and xf86-video-intel and xf86-video-nouveau are installed (although the latter appears to be overridden by the proprietary Nvidia drivers).

Things that work:

  • Setting resolution/placement for external displays

  • glxgears, nvidia-smi, prime-run glxgears

  • CUDA

  • X11 (Xorg always uses 4MB of GPU memory except during prime-run glxgears)

  • WINE applications that try to change resolution run in emulated virtual desktop mode

Things that don't work:

  • Setting resolution for internal display eDP-?1

  • WINE applications that try to change resolution

Things I've tried as suggested on IRC:

  • Setting modeset=1 for nvidia_drm, nvidia_uvm, and i915 in modprobe configs

  • Making an initramfs with i2c_nvidia_gpu, nvidia, nvidia_modeset, nvidia_drm, and nvidia_uvm explicitly loaded

  • Installing xf86-video-intel: Possible progress? Xorg logs no longer report missing files/directories

  • strace "Xorg": strace xrandr with and without a failed xrandr mode returns essentially the same output all the way until the failed call prints "xrandr: Configure crtc 0 failed"

  • strace Xorg: strace startx with and without a failed xrandr mode set returns essentially the same output ignoring memory address differences and a single non-newline character inserted/deleted somewhere

Get rid of xf86-video-intel and retry. It's not really in development and basically unsupported for any GPUs newer than ~2013

FWIW many eDP monitors are not really designed to run at non native resolutions, so this could be a hardware quirk regardless.

Having removed xf86-video-intel, the problem persists. Xrandr output remains the same, but Xorg is once again complaining about a missing file/directory. Do you think there might be something I can reference from /proc or /sys that could confirm it's a hardware quirk?

Xorg is once again complaining about a missing file/directory

It's going through possibly usable drivers, that's just noise you can safely ignore - and remove xf86-video-nouveau as well.
The problem is the EDID, resp. the panel.

You're gonna be able to alter the resolution through xrandr --scale, but wine won't (it could, but probably doesn't implement such)
The behavior got somewhat stricter some months (years?) ago because of reports of damaged panels.

Since this is a hybrid system
1. can you disable the IGP?
2. enable https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/NVIDIA … de_setting - (use the "nvidia_drm.modeset=1" kernel parameter)

1. It's not in the BIOS options, but I've booted with Nvidia modules explicitly loaded into the initramfs, and module_blacklist=i915 certainly keeps i915 from showing up in lsmod. Strangely enough, the only effect seems to be breaking the integrated audio, because glxgears, Pymol, Firefox on earth.nullschool.net, and xscreensaver-demo on 3D screensaver don't add even 1MB to nvidia-smi's GPU memory usage readings. Interestingly, any time Firefox is supposed to invoke a system sound or Terminator is supposed to sound an audible bell, this causes a loud crackle from the speaker even though pavucontrol can't detect any plugged in devices.
2. I enabled nvidia_drm.modeset via /etc/modprobe.d, and /sys/module/nvidia_drm/parameters/modeset contains "Y". Do I need to do it further up the chain, i.e. in the bootloader config?
3. Before rebooting to make i915 blacklisting stick, I got the same output seen in your post (presumably decoded from something in previously posted logs?) for one of the cards. After rebooting, less output results:

That's not the same and won't work - you're just running on the simpledrm device now - the eDP remains wired to the intel chip.
=> DON'T DO THAT.

The idea was to see whether the eDP shows up w/ a different EDID when rewired to the nvidia chip that one then might inject into the intel boot because the panel can plasibly deal with those modes.
The modeline in the EDID isn't a CVT standard (and for 144Hz) so you probably cannot just use one of the default EDIDs w/o losing that mode.

Sorry for the delayed response. It appears xrandr --output eDP-1 --scale with a tiny wrapper for turning resolution into xscale/yscale (and maybe xrandr --fb) are indeed exactly what I need! Thank you for helping to figure this out. smile
