I have two monitors.  One is MSI MAG323UPF.  It is 4k 160 hz.

Looks good.  However half the time I restart my computer it is locked at 30hz.  It is the only option in display properties.
The only way I know to fix this is restart until it is 160 hz again.  Usually one restart doesn't fix this.  Have to restart twice.

Using Wayland Gnome
Had the same problem in KDE X11 or Wayland

X11 had even more problems.  It usually wouldn't even come on.
Xfce was problematic too.

Very annoying.
Was a long time ago but don't remember having any issues in Windows

Re: [SOLVED] [I think] Dual monitor and 4k monitor refresh rate

Sounds like late loading KMS issues. Did you also add the nvidia modules into the initramfs to ensure they're loaded early, as described in https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Kernel … _KMS_start ?

Re: [SOLVED] [I think] Dual monitor and 4k monitor refresh rate

oh, I missed kms hook though
Will see if that fixes

MODULES=(nvidia nvidia_modeset nvidia_uvm nvidia_drm)
BINARIES=()
FILES=()
HOOKS=(base udev autodetect microcode kms keyboard keymap modconf block filesystems fsck)

Rebooted and 30 hz.

Re: [SOLVED] [I think] Dual monitor and 4k monitor refresh rate

The output of xrandr is irrelevant on wayland…

Enable https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/NVIDIA … de_setting - use the "nvidia_drm.modeset=1" kernel parameter (modprobe.conf won't do!), add an Xorg config that says

Section "Device"
Driver  "nvidia"
Option "ModeDebug" "True"
EndSection

start an X11 session and post the updated xorg log (assuming there's still an issue w/ the refresh rate)

Re: [SOLVED] [I think] Dual monitor and 4k monitor refresh rate

I do have nvidia_drm.modeset=1 in my systemd-boot as shown above.
I logged in to gnome x11 fine but still with the same problem
Added to /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Section "Device"
Driver  "nvidia"
Option "ModeDebug" "True"
EndSection

rebooted but then gnome refused to log in to X11
Enter my password at gdm but just returns to login screen.
Log wasn't updated

Re: [SOLVED] [I think] Dual monitor and 4k monitor refresh rate

Not in that Xorg log.

[  4326.809] Kernel command line: initrd=\initramfs-linux-lts.img root=PARTUUID=a842a0f6-5814-4c19-acc3-959a6aa0016d rw rootfstype=ext4

Log wasn't updated

Post the system journal for that boot, GDM initially logs X11 there (as explained in the posted link)

Ftr, sth. like /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-nvidia.conf would be preferable.

Edit: Also please post

for OUT in /sys/class/drm/card*; do echo $OUT; edid-decode $OUT/edid; echo "================="; done

You'll need https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/edid-decode-git

Re: [SOLVED] [I think] Dual monitor and 4k monitor refresh rate

I changed to a DisplayPort cable.  It seems to fix the problem mostly as I can tell.  However I did reboot once and it didn't even list  my 4k imonitor.  Only my other was shown in gnome display properties.  I don't know.  Thanks and I'll post again if l have anymore problems
