I am using Gnome and the "cleartype" patched cairo/libxft/freetype from AUR. On my particular LCD these immensely improve font quality. I have noticed though that OpenOffice.org seems to render fonts in a different (and in my opinion ugly) way. I tried reverting to the default cairo/libxft/freetype packages but even then OO.org seems to ignore my settings (e.g. it always uses either no or full hinting, ignoring the slight hinting option). So does it come with its own font rendering library? Some googling seems to point in that direction, unfortunately the how-tos I can find on getting it to use the system font rendering libs are out of date.
Anyone have any ideas on how one would get this to work?
Thanks in advance.

I've always had these troubles with OOo and font rendering. If you find a solution please post it so that we all can benefit :-D
