[SOLVED] Intel AX201 iwlwifi: ... failed with error -110... Intel AMT

Hello,

I have recently installed Arch coming from Windows 11, however I am encountering issues when trying to load the kernel module for the WiFi adapter. I disabled fast boot previously in Windows 11 and using the following command to indicate if fast boot was enabled and it was not.

(GP "HKLM:\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Power")."HiberbootEnabled"
0

Furthermore, I have tried Ubuntu as well to indicate if it was a user error but that encountered the same error too. It seems these errors occur regardless of whether the kernel attempts to load them at boot or I manually load them using modprobe.
Hopefully someone can point me in the direction to fixing this issue.

Thanks,
Harry Ramsey.

110 is a timeout, does it help to unload and re-load the iwlwifi module?
What's the output of "rfkill"?

In general, please don't apply random filters - the timeout makes a bus issue more likely.

lspci -tvnn # to see the neighbourhood

and please post your complete system journal for the boot:

sudo journalctl -b | curl -F 'file=@-' 0x0.st

Unloading and reloading the iwlwifi module generates the same error.
The output of rfkill is:

# rfkill

 0 bluetooth tpacpi_bluetooth_sw unblocked unblocked

It's very similar to my problem, I think it's a 6.9 kernel problem or linux firmware package.

Re: [SOLVED] Intel AX201 iwlwifi: ... failed with error -110... Intel AMT

The system cannot probe the device, the firmware doesn't even get loaded (though make sure to have linux-firmware installed) and

tried Ubuntu as well to indicate if it was a user error but that encountered the same error

There's a UBS on the same bus and the camera and bluetooth are attached to that USB, but they don't act up and the system doesn't support ACPI at all.

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Kernel_parameters (the second one is default, though)

iwlwifi.bt_coex_active=0 iwlwifi.power_save=0

If it wasn't for your initial assertion, I'd tell you to disable fast-start, because it looks *exactly* like what you'd expect, see eg. https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=296091
Anecdotally, make sure to have rebooted windows twice after disabling fast-start, you could also try to re-enable the device there.

Unrelated:

Unfortunately, that does not seem to work either.

Thanks for that spot.

Here is the latest log with those kernel parameters, same error I believe.
https://0x0.st/XLOM.txt
I think I will try an earlier kernel version later just to assert it isn't the current kernel/firmware. I believe I may have had an older version of Ubuntu successfully running a few months ago.

Was yours working in previous kernels?

I have tried additional steps to narrow down the issue now but no success;
- Reinstalled Windows, disabled fast boot and shutdown/booted the system twice and also restarted the system.
- Disabled WiFi in Windows and BIOS.
- Tested kernel 5.15 and previous firmware.
- Moved drivers from /lib/firmware to another folder to narrow down any version issues.

At this point I am uncertain where to head and I am slowly assuming that the AX201 is just incompatible with anything other than Windows on Lenovo Thinkpads at this time.

I have tried the same things as you, although some of the things seem to work after a few hours the controller also breaks. It happened to me with an AX200 a little over a year ago and for that reason I bought the AX210, however, now when I bought another AX210 I have delved deeper into the problem and I have realized that this really is a problem with iwlwifi as a driver, like Arch it is a rolling release every time a kernel is released and every time a linux-firmware is released there are changes that one cannot keep track of to know what or what could have caused the failure.

What I did in recent weeks was delete everything related to Arch and install Windows, I tried it for a few days and the WIFI never broke. Then I tried another more stable quote distro like linux mint 21.3 and I didn't have any iwlwifi crashes. Now I am using the beta of Linux 22 and with the default kernel 6.8.X I had no problems. I suspected the 6.9 kernel since the crashes started with that kernel on Arch but I'm not sure which one was 6.9.X. On Linux mint 22 I installed the custom kernel called liquorix 6.9 and after a few hours I had the error again.

Now I have returned to the default kernel of Linux mint 22 beta and I have gone 17 hours without any type of reboot.

Finally, from my perspective the problem is between linux-firmware and linux package. Getting specifically to which commit or what time and date the problem was introduced seems impossible to me from my level of knowledge.

I found a workaround reloading manually the module iwlwifi.

It has been tested on linux mint.

For me at least, it does not seem Linux mint and reloading them module works currently.

Are there any physical issues that might cause the adapter to timeout on Linux?

Short of hibernating windows leaving the device in an undefined condition the next-best contender if even reloading the driver later on doesn't work would be the firmware.
Try to pretend that you're windows 11,

Pretending to be Windows 11 did not work however a Lenovo support representative recently encountered this error and it is due to Intel AMT being enabled in the BIOS. Disabling it has enabled the iwlwifi to work correctly as expected.

Perhaps AMT does not work on Linux which was why the system was being restrictive when compared to Windows?
