Shutdown does not complete entirely, screen and fan on

Sometimes when I power off the laptop it just keeps on indefinitely, with the following message in screen:

[ OK ] Reached target System Shutdown.
[ OK ] Reached target Late Shutdown Services.
[ OK ] Finished System Power Off.
[ OK ] Reached target System Power Off.
_

But the screen keeps on and the fan turning. Any way to find out what's happening?
