[SOLVED] Laptop microphone stopped working after booting Windows

Hello.
I've been running Linux on my laptop for a little over a year now, and across multiple distros I've had intermittent problems with my internal microphone not working. At some point, Plasma's settings menu will start showing me "Internal Microphone (unplugged)" and the mic will stop working... and then a couple months later it magically starts working again.
I thought it was a driver or firmware problem until now, but today I had an interesting sequence happen while I was doing updates.

  1. Do system updates, yay -Syu and all that stuff (Mic working)

  2. Reboot into Linux (Mic working)

  3. Reboot into Windows

  4. Reboot into Linux (Mic not working)

Since the mic worked the first time I rebooted, my suspicion is that booting Windows is somehow causing my mic to stop working in Linux. But I have no idea how that might happen, which is why I reached out to this forum.
This problem is quite frustrating and it keeps coming back, so I'd really like to have it fixed. Thank you! smile

Some information about my PC (Please feel free to mention anything I could do to get more info for you)

Kernel: 6.10.2-arch1-1 (64-bit)
KDE Plasma: 6.1.3 Wayland
Pipewire: 1.2.2

Re: [SOLVED] Laptop microphone stopped working after booting Windows

That can be a normal occurence because Windows can leave your firmware in an undefined state. Make sure fast boot is disabled in Windows and reboot both of them a couple of times to make sure the firmware is in a defined state: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Dual_b … ibernation

What could also help is explicitly reinitalizing ALSA firmware state, try a

sudo alsactl init

if that didn't help, post

arecord -lL #alsa-utils
pactl list cards
pactl list sources
pactl list source-outputs

while in a not working situation.

FWIW what happens if you explicitly enable the profile regardless of whether it's considered unplugged? With

pactl set-source-port alsa_input.pci-0000_00_1f.3.analog-stereo analog-input-internal-mic

Re: [SOLVED] Laptop microphone stopped working after booting Windows

Long story short: It works now! Thank you!

I disabled hibernation on Windows and rebooted both Windows and Linux multiple times, but that didn't fix the mic. But you mentioned that Windows can leave firmware in an undefined state, so on a random hunch I chose "shut down" instead of "restart" in Windows, then powered on my PC with the power button into Linux and that worked!

I can still reproduce the broken state if I go back into Windows and select "restart". I thought shutting down+powering on and restarting did the same thing if fast boot is turned off, but apparently not neutral My best guess is that this is just another of those "screw Windows" situations?

Either way, thank you! It feels really good to finally know the cause of this problem that's been plaguing my PC for so long.
