I have an Asus Zephyrus G14 2021. It has hybrid graphics, with a dedicated Nvidia RTX 3060 and integrated graphics from a Ryzen 9 5900HS.
For the past 6 months or so, occasionally when it boots, when it gets to launching SDDM it shows a black screen with a cursor in the top left. I can't quit it and trying to switch to a virtual console does nothing. All I can do it power off the machine and try again.
The weird thing is that it may not do it for a long time, then one day I go to turn on the laptop and it does this. Then powering off and starting the machine again it sometimes continues to do this. If I disable the sddm service, login to the console then manually start the service, the same thing happens. But if I launch Xorg with startx, then X runs.
I haven't bothered doing anything up until now as I thought it was just once of those bugs that would fix itself with an update, but it's been happening for a while now and it's getting annoying, so here I am ![]()
Looking through the log files of Xorg of a successful and a failed start, it seems there are a few differences:
Good:
* AMDgpu is used for /dev/dri/card1
* nvidia is used for /dev/dri/card0
* Logs show it using AMDgpu

Enable https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/NVIDIA … de_setting - use the "nvidia_drm.modeset=1" kernel parameter (modprobe.conf won't do!), to get rid of the simpledrm device and the card order swap.
Also SDDM might simply be started too early, consider https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Kernel … _KMS_start or a strategic sleep for the SDDM ExecStartPre, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Systemd#Drop-in_files & https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Iwd#Re … after_boot (the latter just a pattern, ignore the iwd context)
