Gnome: locking session without g/k/xdm possible?

I'm just wondering if there is an easy way to lock the screen at will when not using one of the login managers. The only workaround I can think of is using a screensaver, but I'm not too fond of those. A simple button to lock the session would be nice.

Re: Gnome: locking session without g/k/xdm possible?

I solved my own problem and the answer is: I'm dumb.

In case anyone else was wondering it turns out the gnome-screensaver adds a "lock screen" option to the menu so you can just configure it to never activate automatically, and you will have the feature I described.

Re: Gnome: locking session without g/k/xdm possible?

that doesn't solve all problems.

CTRL+ALT+Backspace to kill X
startx or whatever to get back into your gnome
and they are in...

with a DM they are not able to kill the DM so are never able to log in to your desktop as you... but without a DM they can be left at your terminal prompt upon killing X and then start gnome or whatever again and use your desktop.
