Monitor put to power off state but powers back on in seconds (wayland)

I am using a command

sleep 0.2; wlopm --off \* 

in labwc (wayland) to power off the monitor. The command works fine. The problem is that the monitor automatically powers back on in a couple of seconds.
What can I do to prevent it from powering on automatically?

It's connected to computer via HDMI. It worked fine when I was using XFCE (X11) via xset command.

Any help appreciated. I've been googleing and asking gemini for weeks now with no luck.
