NVIDIA display glitch after updating from 550 drivers

Screenshot

I've been experiencing some issues ever since I upgraded to NVIDIA driver version 555 a few months ago. I have tried various troubleshooting steps, but nothing has worked so far. Due to these problems, I've been using an older driver version, but I'd prefer to find a permanent solution. The screenshot above was taken with camera as when taking a screenshot it looks normal.

Here are the details of my setup:

  • OS: Arch Linux x86_64

  • Kernel: Linux 6.10.6-arch1-1

  • DE: KDE Plasma 6.1.4

  • WM: KWin (Wayland)

  • Displays:

    • DELL P2414H: 1920x1080 @ 60 Hz

    • X233H: 1920x1080 @ 60 Hz <---- affected monitor

    • DELL E2213: 1680x1050 @ 60 Hz

  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Ti [Discrete]

  • Driver: NVIDIA (using nvidia-dkms, nvidia-utils)

Here are some relevant outputs that might help diagnose the issue:

Not sure if it matters, but I am running systemd-boot.

I had posted this on r/archlinux and someone there suggested to test 560 drivers and ensuring that SDDM was set to use Wayland.

Re: NVIDIA display glitch after updating from 550 drivers

https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=298733 but no idea how to control that w/ wayland.

for OUT in /sys/class/drm/card*; do echo $OUT; edid-decode $OUT/edid; echo "================="; done

You'll need https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/edid-decode-git

And see whether you can reproduce this w/ plasma on X11 and whether setting the output mode does help.

Also, as a test I uninstalled anything related to nvidia, plasma, sddm. Ran commands to remove data files. Reinstalled everything after figuring out how to get networking working again. Back to how it was.
Okay, as a test I was in the virtual console (TTY?) and on the monitor still has the issue in the shell. I tried in Gnome as a test. Same issue.
At this point I am considering switching to Fedora just for now as I am limited on time and do not want to spend what little time I have troubleshooting this. I like Arch but yeah.

Re: NVIDIA display glitch after updating from 550 drivers

You stand a better chance switching
0. The monitor
1. to X11
2. to gnome/wayland
3. to nouveau
4. the EDID (provided you can find a proper one)
5. the nvidia driver version
than the distro, because the problem will remain the same, but knock yourself out.

The ACR X233H shows up as "RGB color display" but the extension block says Supports YCbCr 4:4:4/Supports YCbCr 4:2:2 and there's 50Hz and interlacedd modes.

qdbus org.kde.KWin /KWin supportInformation

to see what's actually used by kwin (w/ your recent findings just inherited from the kms) here.
Try X11, configure it to use YCbCr and see whether that changes anything (and at least it will allow us to see what mode is actually used)
