Timeshift broke Grub

Hi, I'm new here.

I managed to break my archlinux installation last night. Ran 'pacman -Syu', had sudden problems with a game, and decided to try and use timeshift to revert for the first time. The arch installation guide I used recommended a btrfs with subvolumes /@/ and /@home/, with timeshift. Maybe I didn't quite set it up right. After the rollback reboot grub goes straight to rescue mode. I have a few different OS's installed with different bootloaders, so I hard reset, held delete, and used my bios to use a different grub install to boot to my mint OS on another drive. I mounted the archlinux drive and poked around a bit. The grub.cfg file in that drive's efi partition doesn't look right, I think timeshift may have messed that up. There's nothing in the 10_linux section. I found the pre-rollback snapshot files and tried simply copying them back over the /@/ and /@home/ dirs. Reboot got the grub menu to come up normally for my arch install, but none of the options (not even the original snapshot) boot. The pre-rollback option does at least get part way into booting, but fails to mount /home and dumps me to an arch rescue CLI root login. I looked into journalctl and looked back through the log of when I first tried to rollback, and found a line during post-rollback boot that raised my eyebrows; "Unknown kernel command line parameters "BOOT_IMAGE=/@/boot/vmlinuz-linux", will be passed to user space."

I don't really know what I'm doing, if that's not obvious. I know enough to be dangerous, but I'm still learning and I'm getting tired of not asking for help.

What do I need to provide to the gurus around here to help them help me? I can also boot to an archlinux iso and arch-chroot into the problem drive, if you need me to run some commands and give the outputs. If you can point me to where the journal saves it's log file, I can just pull it up in mint and copy relevant time frames here to the forum.

I'm sure the archlinux help process is a bit different than it is in the mint community, but here's mint's system report so you can at least see my hardware. Obviously the System section is not relevant. arch is installed on /dev/sdb2 and it's efi partition is /dev/sdb1. I've got mint on nvme0n1p4 (ext4), Win11 on nvme0n1p3, they share an efi partition on nvme0n1p1, and mint uses a swap partition nvme0n1p5. There's also a data HDD. The arch live ISO is setup in the mint copy of grub to boot from a folder within the nvme0n1p4 partition.

Thanks in advance! Sorry for any headache. I'll be back to check on this post in about 11 hours. I have to sleep and work a half shift before I can come back to this issue.

Re: Timeshift broke Grub

Found the issue with reverting the Timeshift rollback. The sub volume id's didn't get changed in /@/etc/fstab when Timeshift did all of it's copying, but running 'btrfs subvolume list -o /' showed the old ID's were now associated with copies in the /timeshift-btrfs/snapshots/(date) directory, and the root /@ and /@home sub volumes had changed to something else. Now that I've managed to restore to pre-rollback status, I plan to run grub-install and grub-mkconfig to make sure that's all straight, then pacman -Syu to see if anything's been fixed with the frame rate issue at the title screen in Kerbal Space Program that started all of this.

-update:

[lexi@arch ~]$ sudo grub-install
Installing for x86_64-efi platform.
grub-install: error: cannot find EFI directory.
[lexi@arch ~]$ sudo pacman -Syu grub
:: Synchronizing package databases...
error: failed to synchronize all databases (unable to lock database)
[lexi@arch ~]$

Re: Timeshift broke Grub

It has been pointed out that whatever guide you used was certainly not the officially supported.  https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Installation_guide
As such, we are going to be a bit limited in what we can do to support you.  Do you still have problems with your install?  Have you contacted the publisher of the guide you used?
Also, This does not really meet the criteria for 'System Administration'.  I am going to move it to Newbie Corner without prejudice.

Re: Timeshift broke Grub

Guide used is at this GitHub link

https://gist.github.com/mjkstra/96ce7a5 … 2cdc169bae

I have not contacted the guide author. I did repair grub ok, and my pacman databases. Things seem to be working all normally now, except audio will only play from the headset, not the built-in device.

Re: Timeshift broke Grub

I have identified another issue I believe is related to this post, and haven't found a solution to it yet.

Audio plays through my USB/wireless headset, but not through the speakers plugged into a 3.5mm jack (integrated sound on ASUS MOBO). Here's the info center report of my audio devices;
