Re: somthing with sound

dmix kicks in automatically. Just make sure alsa is properly installed. You will not need to do any configuring unless you e.g. use mpd as a different user.

For usb port there is no dmix by default. What sound card do you have?

Re: somthing with sound

Yes, they should.  Please post the output of 'lsmod' so we can check you've got all the ALSA modules installed.  Also, what apps are you using to test and what sound 'engines' do they use (gStreamer?  aRTs?  Xine?)

Re: somthing with sound

Well, did you do that? Select the ALSA output plugin for XMMS? Did you do the same for MPlayer? Otherwise, become root and run

pacman -S alsa-lib alsa-utils
alsaconfig

Afterwards start alsamixer and check if no channels are muted.

Yes, that is what I meant. While the modules are loaded, the configuration can still be broken. Do I get you right that you have sound working but you can't use two or more output sources at once? Is this right with any application and not only XMMS and MPlayer (both must be specifically set to ALSA)?

I get this error only if I select OSS.
try to play the movie with "mplayer -ao alsa movie_file (force ALSA output); and select ALSA plugin in XMMS (Preferences-Output plugin - ALSA - Configure - Select your soundcard from the dropdown). This always works for me.
