Re: laptop freezing / crashing during regular use

You should probably have a look at Wiki: ASUS_Zenbook_UM5606 and install the linux-mainline-um5606 kernel and firmware described there. It will fix most of your problems including Bluetooth and keyboard backlight.

I'm still getting occasional gpu resets, but usually nothing kwin can't recover from. Some people seemingly don't any problems running that kernel, but I'd like to know more about that myself.

Edit: I just realized you're not talking about the ASUS Vivobook S 16, but I do think this still applies, mostly.

Do you have the same problem w/ the LTS kernel?
Can you force it (on X11) w/ "xset dpms force off"?
Do you only use the built-in panel or also an external monitor? A dock?

Re: laptop freezing / crashing during regular use

I use an external monitor, but this also happens when im using it with nothing plugged in at all, doing the "xset dpms force off" commmand just made my screen black,. i fixed the sysrq to be always on in my kernel paramaters and i switched to lts i will see if anything happens now

Re: laptop freezing / crashing during regular use

I changed to LTS now I can't enter my system because I get the error
Warning: /lib/modules/6.6.50-1-lts/modules.devname not found - ignoring
It then says waiting 10 seconds for device
ERROR: device '/dev/mapper/root' not found. Skipping fsck.
: : mounting '/dev/mapper/root' on real root.
mount: /new_root: unknown filesystem type 'ext4'.
dmesg(1) may have more information after failed mount system call.
ERROR: Failed to mount '/dev/mapper/root' on real root
You are now being dropped into an emergency shell.
sh: can't access tty: job control turned off

Also i can't type after that happens

So I am reinstalling the os with LTS kernel only

Amdgpu has a fatal error with LTS kernel

Re: laptop freezing / crashing during regular use

How did you "change" to the LTS kernel??
You don't have to change anything, you can install the LTS kernel parallel to the main one, update your bootloader config and be fine.
You also don't have to re-install the system, you can fix it from eg. the install iso (mount and in doubt chroot into the system)

Amdgpu has a fatal error with LTS kernel

And what error specifically?

Edit:

Sep 10 14:48:36 archlinux kernel: amd_atl: Failed to determine DF Revision

Ah, you've a very new Strix GPU - it's not supported by the LTS kernel
https://www.mail-archive.com/kernel-pac … 28787.html

You probably want to try https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/linux-drm-tip-git
Notice, again: you do not have to replace kernels.
You can install the LTS kernel, the main kernel and the drm-tip kernel at the same time and when booting select which one to use (while the LTS kernel is useless for you, sorry - missed that. Try to post complete logs tongue)

Edit #2:

doing the "xset dpms force off" commmand just made my screen black

That's the expected behavior, the suspicion was that it would maybe trigger the freeze.

Re: laptop freezing / crashing during regular use

Sorry for that so what i did was installed lts kernel then I went into the /boot/loader/entries and changed

linux   /vmlinuz-linux to linux   /vmlinuz-linux-lts on both including the fallback

Im not sure How am i meant to install them correctly and be able to boot into them. The way i did it was from a thread i found on here posted a few years ago cant remember which one

What should i do to actually do what you said because i dont really understand what to do

Re: laptop freezing / crashing during regular use

You can just install kernel packages ("pacman -Syu linux" will get you the main one) and create a new loader entry for them, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/System … ng_loaders
For the drmtip kernel you'll have to buildthe AUR package, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Arch_U … g_packages

This is what happens when i try to install the drmtip what should i do? https://pastebin.com/gHi4B5gP

it says all that then nothing happens..

Re: laptop freezing / crashing during regular use

1. not use yay…
2.

Cloning into bare repository '/home/nemesis/.cache/yay/linux-drm-tip-git/linux-drm-tip-git'...
fatal: read error: Connection reset by peer
==> ERROR: Failure while downloading linux-drm-tip-git git repo

 -> error downloading sources: /home/nemesis/.cache/yay/linux-drm-tip-git
	 context: exit status 1

https://aur.archlinux.org/cgit/aur.git/ … ip-git#n37
looks like it's (still) using the deprecated git protocol and the git server times out.
This has moved to https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/tip

https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/linux-amd-drm-next looks maintained, but also uses a kernel config from 6.3.0-arch1

I'd suggest to build https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/tip but there's no AUR package for that.
Simply switching the git url in the PKGBUILD might still be enough, though.

Edit I'll try the next one you linked.

Re: laptop freezing / crashing during regular use

#13 doesn't look like any repo was actually cloned.
Building the kernel can take a moment depending on your hardware and sideload - especially if it builds only one "parallel" job (is only one of the CPU cores used?)

How do I check. Its still going. If I were to stop it where it is now and restart it to utilize CPU would it be faster? My hardware isn't bad at all its been over 3 hours

Re: laptop freezing / crashing during regular use

"top" will tell you what process uses what CPU and https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Makepk … ompilation for multiple jobs
You can ctrl+c the build, but if you're using yay to install the package that might result in the entire package path being deleted (idk. what yay will do as next step in this case) - otherwise exporting the variable and "makepkg -e" might do.
Whether (in worst case) restarting the entire process with more cores is faster than completing it with one (in case that's currently happening) depends on how far you're currently in and how many cores you have - I guess you're currently building the modules (and since quite a while)? The output is still progressing?

On a formal note, please don't bump. Edit you previous post. Also avoid fully quoting previous posts.

Re: laptop freezing / crashing during regular use

I finally installed the kernel, I made a config file and when I tried to boot into it I got this I hope it's clear enough to read;
BhG9MR0.png

Here is  the config file I made

title Arch Linux (linux-amd-drm-next)
linux /vmlinuz-linux-amd-drm-next
initrd /initramfs-linux.img
options cryptdevice=PARTUUID=e19b52c6-043d-4711-a1d6-631aa0e4785b:root root=/dev/mapper/root zswap.enabled=0 rw rootfstype=ext4 sysrq_always_enabled=1 amdgpu.dcdebugmask=0x12

EDIT: I forgot to change the initrd, Im now using the Kernel: Linux 6.11.0-rc5-1-amd-drm-next-g7a199557643e
ill make a comment if I still encounter crashes

By the way thanks so much for your help and apologies if my comments sounded ignorant or stupid

Re: laptop freezing / crashing during regular use

sudo journalctl -b | curl -F 'file=@-' 0x0.st

But the posted segments contain no amdgpu related errors and I guess you're also rebooting w/ the power button after the crash?
If not (and the sysrq+REISUB dance works), the relevant journal woul be that of the previous boot

sudo journalctl -b -1 | curl -F 'file=@-' 0x0.st

sudo journalctl -b -1 | curl -F 'file=@-' 0x0.st

http://0x0.st/XxBM.txt ( accidentally went in the linux kernel here because of timeout )

http://0x0.st/XxBS.txt ( this is where it crashed)

I enabled sysrq to be always on (1) option so all of the shortcuts are enabled, i pressed sysrq+s then u then b to reboot
