I had a dell XPS13 9560 laptop hooked up to my Aorus Gaming Box 1070 and it performed well, but after a year or so the TB3 port on the side that I hooked up the eGPU to failed. eGPU continued to function when hooked up to the right side.
I then purchased an XPS13 9310 and something similar** occurred after six months. The laptop was under warranty so I had the mainboard replaced, and ~six months later it happened again. This has happened six times, with the mainboard being replaced each time (and once in addition the keyboard/trackpad unit). I have replaced the GPU (swapped 1070 for 4060), the TB3 cable, changed the power strip, and replaced the USB3 peripheral I use on the other side of the laptop. Now Dell is sending me a replacement refurbished laptop and I'm afraid it will simply happen again with the new laptop.
The laptop doesn't ever move from its spot, and besides the enclosure itself I can't think of anything directly connected to the laptop that has remained consistent across these failures. I don't notice any diminished function of the eGPU or any signs on the soft-/firm-ware side that something is wrong.
Before I buy a new enclosure, does anyone have any ideas of what's going on or what I can do to further identify the problem?
Thank you
** the exact failure goes like this: 4-8 months after the replacement mainboard I begin hearing crackling in the AUX audio (not software related, independent of operating system). After a month or so of this crackling worsening, the TB4 port on the eGPU side fails. Some time after that (while using the eGPU in the other side port) the other side port fails. The tb4 port will continue to function with power delivery, but will not recognize any peripheral plugged into it.
TL;DR: the TB3 ports keep dying on my laptop, temporarily fixed after mainboard replacement. How can I see if the egpu is the issue?
