Recent problem with smartctl + mvsas: CHECK POWER MODE not implemented

After upgrading the kernel, I can no longer get smartctl -n to work. I use something like this to collect SMART data:

smartctl -n standby --all /dev/sdX

This is to avoid waking disks when they are spun down.

I previously had linux-lts 6.6.49-1, I recently upgraded to 6.6.52-1 (now 6.6.56-1). Since 6.6.52-1, this is broken, like this:

# smartctl -n standby --all /dev/sde
smartctl 7.4 2023-08-01 r5530 [x86_64-linux-6.6.52-1-lts] (local build)
Copyright (C) 2002-23, Bruce Allen, Christian Franke, www.smartmontools.org

CHECK POWER MODE: incomplete response, ATA output registers missing
CHECK POWER MODE not implemented, ignoring -n option
=== START OF INFORMATION SECTION ===
…

So smartctl can no longer get the power state and always queries the drive. When I see this error, the kernel also reports this:

[ 23.721004] sas: Enter sas_scsi_recover_host busy: 1 failed: 1
[ 23.721012] sas: ata7: end_device-6:0: cmd error handler
[ 23.721027] sas: ata7: end_device-6:0: dev error handler
[ 23.721046] sas: ata8: end_device-6:1: dev error handler
[ 23.721051] sas: ata9: end_device-6:2: dev error handler
[ 23.721054] sas: ata10: end_device-6:3: dev error handler
[ 23.721058] sas: ata11: end_device-6:4: dev error handler
[ 23.721061] sas: ata12: end_device-6:5: dev error handler
[ 23.721067] sas: --- Exit sas_scsi_recover_host: busy: 0 failed: 1 tries: 1

This effectively means all disks are spun up all the time, doubling the system’s average power draw. I don’t want that.

smartctl communicates with the drive like this:

# smartctl -d test /dev/sde
smartctl 7.4 2023-08-01 r5530 [x86_64-linux-6.6.56-1-lts] (local build)
Copyright (C) 2002-23, Bruce Allen, Christian Franke, www.smartmontools.org

/dev/sde: Device of type 'scsi' [SCSI] detected
/dev/sde [SAT]: Device open changed type from 'scsi' to 'sat'
/dev/sde [SAT]: Device of type 'sat' [ATA] opened

I’m not sure how I would go about diagnosing this further. I’m not a kernel hacker/developer. I would appreciate any advice!

Re: Recent problem with smartctl + mvsas: CHECK POWER MODE not implemented

A while ago I have reported a similar error against the ATA subsystem in the kernel: https://lore.kernel.org/all/0bf3f2f0-0f … @heusel.eu

Could please verify again that the problem occurs on your hardware with the versions you have specified as broken? Also it would be good if you could narrow it down further by upgrading one version at a time via https://archive.archlinux.org/packages/l/linux-lts/

This could start out investigating, I will check my NAS in the meantime if it shows similar behaviour ..
Edit: Can't repro on my NAS, but my setup there is also quite different enough so I'd say this does not matter.

Re: Recent problem with smartctl + mvsas: CHECK POWER MODE not implemented

(If anyone else tries this: don’t forget to deal with the kernel headers package, too!)

Tested:

  • 6.6.49-1: smartctl -n standby --attributes /dev/sde works

  • 6.6.50-1: works

  • 6.6.50-2: works

  • 6.6.51-1: broken (as described in first post)

  • 6.6.52-1: broken (same)

I can see in the 6.6.51 release notes that changes were made to libata. I also discovered the smartctl -r option, so here’s the (relevant) output:

$ sudo smartctl -r ioctl,2 -n standby --attributes /dev/sde
smartctl 7.4 2023-08-01 r5530 [x86_64-linux-6.6.52-1-lts] (local build)
Copyright (C) 2002-23, Bruce Allen, Christian Franke, www.smartmontools.org

sde -> /sys/class/scsi_host/host6/proc_name: "(null)"
/dev/sde [SAT]: Device open changed type from 'scsi' to 'sat'

REPORT-IOCTL: Device=/dev/sde Command=CHECK POWER MODE
 Input: FR=...., SC=...., LL=...., LM=...., LH=...., DEV=...., CMD=0xe5
  status=2: sense_key=0 asc=0 ascq=0
 [Duration: 0.025714s]
CHECK POWER MODE: incomplete response, ATA output registers missing
REPORT-IOCTL: Device=/dev/sde Command=CHECK POWER MODE returned -1 errno=38 [Function not implemented]
Sector Count Register (BASE-16): 00
CHECK POWER MODE not implemented, ignoring -n option

…not that I can understand the problem. From the smartmontools source code, it would appear this output is the result of no output data (out.out_regs.is_set() returns false). Why though?

---

How would I go about bisecting the Arch kernel package? Using the linux-git AUR package and the bisect guide and then just roll with it? Or is there some special procedure because I’m using the LTS kernel?

Re: Recent problem with smartctl + mvsas: CHECK POWER MODE not implemented

So there are only a handful of commits that are ata related in the changes for these versions, of which the first two look especially relevant IMO:

$ git log --pretty=oneline v6.6.50..v6.6.51 | grep ata:
872f86e1757bbb0a334ee739b824e47c448f5ebc ata: libata-scsi: Check ATA_QCFLAG_RTF_FILLED before using result_tf
c8d4acb325302fd832e10d5ba17b1b8eba9d08f9 ata: libata-scsi: Remove redundant sense_buffer memsets
b777131d03be76594849da084a14853f72cf0e37 ata: pata_macio: Use WARN instead of BUG
c0fbc9593b18b9d7ad0ad500f2ff55bbbf8ab2a2 ata: libata: Fix memory leak for error path in ata_host_alloc()

If you want you could try the following build that has the first one reverted:

sudo pacman -U https://pkgbuild.com/\~gromit/linux-bisection-kernels/linux-lts-6.6.51-1.1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst

And this image has the first and the second one reverted (they apparently depended on each other since I got a merge conflict):

sudo pacman -U https://pkgbuild.com/\~gromit/linux-bisection-kernels/linux-lts-6.6.51-1.2-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst

If all that does not help we can do a proper bisection big_smile

Also it would be interesting to see if the issue also is present in the latest mainline release candidate:

sudo pacman -U https://pkgbuild.com/\~gromit/linux-bisection-kernels/linux-mainline-6.12rc3-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst

Re: Recent problem with smartctl + mvsas: CHECK POWER MODE not implemented

Thank you for providing these builds! Unfortunately I cannot use them as-is, I also need the corresponding headers packages for my DKMS modules.

And that is also why I won’t be able to easily test newer kernels: My entire system is on ZFS and ZFS is only compatible up to 6.9 at the moment. I could try with a live USB, it wouldn’t necessarily have to be Arch either. I’m not familiar with any distro so far ahead though, that’s not my area of interest. :-)

Re: Recent problem with smartctl + mvsas: CHECK POWER MODE not implemented

The corresponding header packages are also uploaded next to the kernel image, just also install them like so:

sudo pacman -U https://pkgbuild.com/\~gromit/linux-bisection-kernels/linux-lts-6.6.51-1.1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst https://pkgbuild.com/\~gromit/linux-bisection-kernels/linux-lts-headers-6.6.51-1.1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst

Re: Recent problem with smartctl + mvsas: CHECK POWER MODE not implemented

I found the current Fedora Rawhide build to have a sufficiently recent kernel: 6.12.0 (27cc6fdf7201). It does not have this issue. smartctl works as expected.

I also tried the builds you provided:

  • 6.6.51-1.1: works

  • 6.6.51-1.2: works

So the first commit is likely causing this. I don’t get it though. If the changed code is triggered, it should always print a debug message, but I never saw them. Are debug messages somehow hidden by default and I need to enable them in /proc/sys/kernel/printk or something?

Re: Recent problem with smartctl + mvsas: CHECK POWER MODE not implemented

I think you can enable them either via "/proc/sys/kernel/printk" or by setting "loglevel=7". I guess we need KERN_DEBUG for this message to be displayed.

Re: Recent problem with smartctl + mvsas: CHECK POWER MODE not implemented

Hm that appears not to work. I did this:

# echo 7 > /proc/sys/kernel/printk
# cat /proc/sys/kernel/printk
7 4 1 4

What’s visible in /proc/kmsg or dmesg doesn’t change though. It does change what’s printed on the physical console. The only related output I get is this:

<5>[ 529.950200] sas: Enter sas_scsi_recover_host busy: 1 failed: 1
<7>[ 529.950929] sas: ata7: end_device-6:0: cmd error handler
<7>[ 529.950973] sas: ata7: end_device-6:0: dev error handler
<7>[ 529.950992] sas: ata8: end_device-6:1: dev error handler
<7>[ 529.950998] sas: ata9: end_device-6:2: dev error handler
<7>[ 529.951002] sas: ata10: end_device-6:3: dev error handler
<7>[ 529.951006] sas: ata11: end_device-6:4: dev error handler
<7>[ 529.951010] sas: ata12: end_device-6:5: dev error handler
<5>[ 529.951142] sas: --- Exit sas_scsi_recover_host: busy: 0 failed: 1 tries: 1

Just like before.

Arch kernels use dynamic debug.

Re: Recent problem with smartctl + mvsas: CHECK POWER MODE not implemented

Alright! Now I finally have the actual branch that fails:

<7>[73893.586148] ata7.00: missing result TF: can't generate ATA PT sense data
<7>[73893.586159] ata7.00: missing result TF: can't set ATA PT sense fields

Thank you very much.

It’s not entirely clear to me were I would file a bug though. Against smartmontools? Or against the kernel?

Re: Recent problem with smartctl + mvsas: CHECK POWER MODE not implemented

I think this is appropriate to file against the kernel, this is the relevant documentation: https://docs.kernel.org/admin-guide/rep … sions.html
See for example the report I have mentioned in my initial posting (https://lore.kernel.org/all/0bf3f2f0-0f … heusel.eu/) for how this should look.
If you need any help in writing the report feel free to ask here! Also if you want I can file the report for you smile

Re: Recent problem with smartctl + mvsas: CHECK POWER MODE not implemented

I think filing it myself is more appropriate, since I’m in a position to test potential fixes.

Thank you for your support so far! I’ll mark this thread as solved after I file the report.
