Master volume gets set to 100 after screen blanks using 'xset s'

Having a really weird problem.

My laptop is plugged into my Dell UD22 Dock with 2 outputs connected via DisplayPort. My speakers are plugged into one of the monitors.

Audio is more or less working as expected, but when my screen blanks due to my 'xset s' setting, when my screen comes back on the volume is set to 100.

This has the unfortunate effect of blowing out my ear holes, so I'm looking for a resolution.

I could not find any indication in the wiki as to what might be causing this, and the only forum post I found was this one, which fizzled -> https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=143646

I don't experience this behavior when the laptop is NOT plugged into the dock. Only when I'm plugged into the dock and using audio over HDMI/DisplayPort.

I'm not sure how to go about diagnosing this and would appreciate any insights the community can provide.

I'm assuming the dock always presents a "new" device whenever this happens, what outputs do you get from

aplay -l
pactl list cards
pactl list sinks
xrandr -q

in this situation?
