Couldn't update packages - mirrorlist question

Was there something that happened to the pacman mirrors? The package says it's orphaned even though it's in the Core, which I just noticed today. For a few months every time I was checking for updates it would say there is nothing available. I refreshed my gpg keys and used reflector to update my mirrorlist. Now I see there is almost 4GB worth of updates on my minimal system.

Just wondering what happened.

properly the mirror you used went out of service or stopped syncing
although it shouldn't be required regular updating mirrorlist is a good idea
