Driver problems with i915 possible solutions?

I tried almost everything here is my configuration and various logs

https://linux-hardware.org/?probe=7420944998

sorry in advance for the long list of commands but I would like to be as clear as possible in advance to help you help me

I also checked this discussion but it is very old (2012) and even if I have a backup with rsync I would not like to create errors or problems that compromise the startup
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=136043

I also read this discussion and it recommends mesa-amber but if I use it instead of mesa I get graphic distortions and severe slowdown

Re: Driver problems with i915 possible solutions?

tiger lake is way to new for mesa-amber, the confusion probably stems from mesa using i915 as name for a non-gallium driver that is deprecated and has been replaced by the gallium iris driver . Typically only intel graphics older then approx 10 years need mesa-amber .

The -x parameter for jounral output should not be used on this forum , as it adds lots of output that works great for lowering the signal to noise ratio substantially.
(it has valid usecases, but posting useful logs on this forum isn't one of them).

The error messages look troubling , but lack context .

Please run as root (or with root rights ) journalctl -b  curl -F 'file=@-' 0x0.st .
It will upload journal from current boot to  a publoic pastebin site and output  a link. post that link .

Re: Driver problems with i915 possible solutions?

http://0x0.st/XDBR.txt

here are the logs thanks for the help

I'm using the lts kernel at the moment as a test to see if it changes anything

Re: Driver problems with i915 possible solutions?

What happens if you get rid of all of your i915 parameters you are setting (the modprobe and the cmdline), what's the reason you are setting those for? especially dc=0 is likely problematic on newer screen/connectors.

The LTS kernel is also a year old in terms of new development, can you repro any of this on the current stable kernel? ah you get the issues on the current kernel and checked with LTS, but yeah same error.

Do you get any actual problem from this or is it just a crash? It's a timeout on something, do you have any "non-standard"/additional monitors connected?

Re: Driver problems with i915 possible solutions?

more than anything else they are all tests that I have done,
I have the same errors with 0 parameters and the rolling kernel,
in fact I am rebooting to return to the basic situation I used dc=0 using mesa-amber to try to understand if it was the energy saving that caused the slowdown, but for now it has not worked,
as parameters now I have nothing, I use the lts kernel as a backup in case the rolling gives me problems or as in this case during the resolution of the errors

Re: Driver problems with i915 possible solutions?

Please post  a fresh journal now you removed those parameters.

Also post the contents of your /etc/mkinictcpio.conf file .

Re: Driver problems with i915 possible solutions?

https://0x0.st/XDMY.txt

cat /etc/mkinitcpio.conf

# vim:set ft=sh
# MODULES
# The following modules are loaded before any boot hooks are
# run. Advanced users may wish to specify all system modules
# in this array. For instance:
# MODULES=(usbhid xhci_hcd)
MODULES=(i915)

# BINARIES
# This setting includes any additional binaries a given user may
# wish into the CPIO image. This is run last, so it may be used to
# override the actual binaries included by a given hook
# BINARIES are dependency parsed, so you may safely ignore libraries
BINARIES=()

# FILES
# This setting is similar to BINARIES above, however, files are added
# as-is and are not parsed in any way. This is useful for config files.
FILES=()

# HOOKS
# This is the most important setting in this file. The HOOKS control the
# modules and scripts added to the image, and what happens at boot time.
# Order is important, and it is recommended that you do not change the
# order in which HOOKS are added. Run 'mkinitcpio -H <hook name>' for
# help on a given hook.
# 'base' is _required_ unless you know precisely what you are doing.
# 'udev' is _required_ in order to automatically load modules
# 'filesystems' is _required_ unless you specify your fs modules in MODULES
# Examples:
## This setup specifies all modules in the MODULES setting above.
## No RAID, lvm2, or encrypted root is needed.
# HOOKS=(base)
#
## This setup will autodetect all modules for your system and should
## work as a sane default
# HOOKS=(base udev autodetect modconf block filesystems fsck)
#
## This setup will generate a 'full' image which supports most systems.
## No autodetection is done.
# HOOKS=(base udev modconf block filesystems fsck)
#
## This setup assembles a mdadm array with an encrypted root file system.
## Note: See 'mkinitcpio -H mdadm_udev' for more information on RAID devices.
# HOOKS=(base udev modconf keyboard keymap consolefont block mdadm_udev encrypt filesystems fsck)
#
## This setup loads an lvm2 volume group.
# HOOKS=(base udev modconf block lvm2 filesystems fsck)
#
## This will create a systemd based initramfs which loads an encrypted root filesystem.
# HOOKS=(base systemd autodetect modconf kms keyboard sd-vconsole sd-encrypt block filesystems fsck)
#
## NOTE: If you have /usr on a separate partition, you MUST include the
# usr and fsck hooks.
HOOKS=(base udev autodetect microcode modconf kms keyboard keymap consolefont block filesystems fsck)

# COMPRESSION
# Use this to compress the initramfs image. By default, zstd compression
# is used for Linux ≥ 5.9 and gzip compression is used for Linux < 5.9.
# Use 'cat' to create an uncompressed image.
#COMPRESSION="zstd"
#COMPRESSION="gzip"
#COMPRESSION="bzip2"
#COMPRESSION="lzma"
#COMPRESSION="xz"
#COMPRESSION="lzop"
#COMPRESSION="lz4"

# COMPRESSION_OPTIONS
# Additional options for the compressor
#COMPRESSION_OPTIONS=()

# MODULES_DECOMPRESS
# Decompress loadable kernel modules and their firmware during initramfs
# creation. Switch (yes/no).
# Enable to allow further decreasing image size when using high compression
# (e.g. xz -9e or zstd --long --ultra -22) at the expense of increased RAM usage
# at early boot.
# Note that any compressed files will be placed in the uncompressed early CPIO
# to avoid double compression.
#MODULES_DECOMPRESS="no"

almost unusable if you mean the test with mesa-Amber graphic glitches when opening any software plus slowdown with amber, with mesa I have no problems
only I would like to solve these continuous warnings on the logs, and no I do not have external monitors

here for the current configuration and everything in general https://linux-hardware.org/?probe=cac83daa57

Re: Driver problems with i915 possible solutions?

Stop using/testing mesa-amber it's absolutely not necessary and absolutely the wrong driver for your GPU. Use standard mesa, remove xf86-video-intel if it's installed.

Googling for the error shows something like https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/i915 … ssues/8081 which suggest that your UEFI provides bogus information to the driver, potentially check whether you can receive an UEFI update/whether there are UEFI settings to disable thunderbolt if you don't actually use it.

You are basically running into this warning: https://github.com/torvalds/linux/blob/ … #L624-L628 ... suggesting your UEFI reports a wrong TC lane count. If you're annoyed by this, write a bug report on https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/i915 … /-/issues/ following the guidelines in: https://drm.pages.freedesktop.org/intel … -bugs.html -- since this is just a warning with no negative impact especially when not using usb-c/thunderbolt connectors I'd say the safest immediate action -- and I know this is hard -- is to simply ignore the fact that you are getting this warning. You are basically trying to combat an error that has no impact on you.

So safest bets, from best to worst in terms of potential impact:

  • Ignore the thing, it's a "known weird situation" that's handled by the driver appropriately -- you might want to report this as noted above, to take the edge off for future people

  • Update your UEFI in hopes of it fixing the underlying bogus information

  • Test linux-mainline, there are a few changes here in 6.12 though none look like they'd have an impact on this occurence

  • Change to the experimental Xe intel driver with the kernel params: "i915.force_probe=!12e1 xe.force_probe=12e1" -- but this is experimental, will only work on 6.8+ kernels, not yet the default for a reason, but maybe you avoid the warning

Do not try to fix this with mesa it's completely irrelevant to this and you probably also don't want to try to find older kernels where this warning isn't present.

Re: Driver problems with i915 possible solutions?

at the moment then I ignore the problem since I only use this laptop to program in c and I don't need Thunderbolt or USB-c,
but I will keep myself informed on the situation in case of an applicable resolution more than anything else for obsession in making everything work 100% before using the machine,
but evidently I have to relax xD,

unfortunately on the official msi website I am already on the latest version of the E1552IMS.B09 firmware
and I can't even disable Thunderbolt at least from the provided UI, and I don't have the desire-ability-time and fear of doing damage,
like reversing the firmware to disable thunderbolt with some asm instructions and then updating the modified firmware,

I know it's crazy, "I study embedded for this maybe I thought this but probably a pc firmware is very different from a micro controller",
but I thought it when I saw that it is not possible to remove thunderbolt and I have too little knowledge to be able to do it,

Thank you all so much and sorry for the unnecessary info.

Re: Driver problems with i915 possible solutions?

The info you provided is fine, but given what we see of what triggers this it's likely to be more fruitful to just ignore this, sadly MSI has a track record for weird UEFI bugs so I'd assume this is potentially par for the course.
