I can't seem to get my nVidia driver to work. I'm using the 96xx since it's a Geforce 420 Go card and a stock kernel. I can run X fine with vesa, but when I try to start X with nvidia, the screen just turns blank and does nothing, and I don't seem to get any errors (though I don't know if there is a log file for me to check). I think I have the right HorizSync and VertRefresh and all, but I don't see what else the problem could be, since this is what other wikis/forums have led me to believe. If anyone has any ideas, it would be great. Here you can see my xorg.conf file also (it's practically the same I use with vesa, but with the changes recommended by the wiki):

Let me know what other information I can provide. Thanks in advance.

Which one do you think I should use? I think different supported lists are giving me different cards...

I think you should make a backup of your xorg.conf file and then use nvidia-xconfig to make a new one suited for the nvidia driver. That has always solved my issues because it fills in all of the necessary information for you.
Also consider trying just basic nvidia driver.
I have an geforce 4 card running on that driver and it works fine.

I did try nvidia-xconfig but I got the same result, so I started trying to tweak xorg.conf, namely the Sync and Refresh. When I get a chance I'll try it with the basic driver. Would there be anything really obvious that I'm not doing/activating?

I tried it with the default nvidia package, and I got "No screen found" error. Also, the Xorg log stated that I needed the 96xx version since the card I have isn't supported anymore.
I reverted to the 96xx again. Here's my Xorg log and the newer xorg.conf (created by nvidia-xconfig) if they help to solve the problem:

I guess I may just have to stick to vesa though...

i dont know if this applies to you or not but to solve the problem for me i had to add
Option "NvAgp" "8"
since my card is an NVidia FX5200 8x AGP.
