Hi there! I'm new to arch and I have an issue where my PC is freezing. I ran journalctl -k -b -1 and I think the freeze is caused by AMD drivers as the last error is: amdgpu 0000:07:00.0: amdgpu: failed to write reg 28b4 wait reg 28c6
Offline
Don't break the freeze by holding the power button until the system reboots - frenetically press ctrl+alt+del or use the https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Keyboa … el_(SysRq) (REISUB) and then post the entire journal of the previous boot (-b -1)
Offline
I've got the same problem after the last update. I'll send full journalctl logs as soon as possible. That's what I have at the point, the last log right before reset:
What I tried to do: use linux-lts kernel and reinstall amdgpu driver. It does not help.

Please use

tags. Edit your posts in this regard.
Also don't copy-paste out of the pager, if you can, upload the journal for the boot, eg. for the previous boot:
sudo journalctl -b -1 | curl -F 'file=@-' 0x0.st

Just for the records: I have the same problem with an AMD-APU (spontaneous freeze - Arch with KDE Plasma6) after an update a few days ago. Trying to find the reason but no solution yet.

Same message in the journal?
=> same apprpoach, see whether it's power saving related ( https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 4#p2212674 )

Probably it could be problems with Chromium-based web applications. System freezing starts after interacting with the Chromium webview based application (Steam, Tauri app, VS Code).

Is the chromium-based chromium likewise affected?
Regardless, the stall comes from the andgpu module, have you tried to disable the powersaving features?

Think i'm affected by this too. My AMD APU based system started freezing randomly while using chromium based browsers about a week ago. This is the only dmesg log entry i see before the crash:
Dez 14 13:30:02.630734 Prime kernel: amdgpu 0000:0a:00.0: amdgpu: Dumping IP State
Tried LTS and zen kernels to no effect Crashes aren't related to high cpu/gpu load.

This reminds me of this MESA issue:
https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/mesa/mesa/-/issues/12192
I get what looks like a freeze if I run VSCode or VirtualBox for a few minutes. Unfortunately I don't think anyone is working on a correction.
What I've been doing is switching to a different terminal CTRL-ALT-F2 (This can take like 10 seconds during the freeze) then you can login as root.
From root I've been running pkill -u [USERNAME THAT FROZE]
Then I can switch back CTRL-ALT-F1 and login again. But it's painful.

I put my PC on sleep mode and when I tried to woke it up, it froze again. I tried REISUB, but it didnt work even tho I enabled it, so I had to hold the power button.

I put my PC on sleep mode and when I tried to woke it up, it froze again. I tried REISUB, but it didnt work even tho I enabled it, so I had to hold the power button.
I'm pretty sure this is the bug discussed here:
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=493277
I'm unclear if this is a kernel bug or a graphics driver bug.

It froze again. This time REISUB worked. Here's the log:

That's specifically after waking up from a sleep and apparently specifically

the KDE screenlocker and apparently the output unregisters what'd also explain the flip timeouts since there's no longer a vblank signal.
Can you prevent this w/ https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Intel_ … on_(VSYNC) ?

For all with the "freeze"-experience (with chromium-based browsers/applications): try to downgrade to mesa version 1:24.2.7-1 from the Arch Linux Archive. It worked for me. Seems like a bug.

I'd like to but am not brave enough to do it since partial updates are not supported.

You get permission to do so.
The absolutely worst thing that can happen is that you'll have to boot the multi-user.target (2nd link below) - in doubt along "nomodeset" - and undo the downgrade from the console.
I promist that your computer will not explode

No crashes so far after downgrading, looking really good!
Computer is finally usable again, thank you!

I downgraded mesa to 1:24.2.7-1 but still think I have the issue.
I also have lib32-mesa and vulkan-radeon which I have not downgraded. Maybe they need to be?

I didn't have to, mesa was the only package i downgraded and freezes are completely gone.
For me chromium was the only application that caused them and it uses neither vulkan nor 32bit-mesa.
Vulkan games are also working just fine for me with downgraded mesa, OpenGL is giving me some glitches, so i'm hoping for a permanent fix soon.

@irarch, do you (still) get "amdgpu: Dumping IP State" messages in the journal?

Check your pacman-log and search the update from where the freeze started (if you still know). Copy the filenames you updated and the version number before the update. Now downgrade every single package one after another to the version before the update and check if the freeze is gone or not. Downgrade the next one and so on until you can limit the package(s) which are responsible for the freeze. pro: you know the buggy package(s) / con: it really takes some time.
edit: i just made a full system-update including mesa and the problem still exists - after downgrading just mesa its gone so for me its a bug in mesa since version 1:24.3.xxx with AMD-APUs (maybe external AMD-GPUs too?)

Yes I have an AMD 7800 XT. Just downgrading mesa did not fix it for me. I'm going to downgrade the other 2 graphics driver packages I mentioned and see how that goes.
