[SOLVED] No working fonts on Japanese characters - Cinnamon

Good day! Issue is in the title, let me explain it further:

The main issue is because I have no Japanese kanji, hiragana or katakana appearing whenever present on-screen (e.g. my Duolingo lessons asking me what do I hear but I can't see which kanji to pick). my other languages (Hebrew and Russian) appear fine, it's only Japanese. I have a few fontpacks installed for Japanese, primarily `ttf-koruri` from the AUR, but also Google's `noto-fonts-cjk` alongside Koruri.

Is there a way I could fix it? Big thanks in advance!

2. in a browser or some binary (which)?

Does the cjk work in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akira_Kurosawa (or https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/黒澤明 - if you prefer

Not just Duolingo, but the system in general, it runs in Firefox, and currently as I'm seeing, the text in the link you sent to me (ja.wikipedia) has garbled text in the end in the form of squares with a 4-digit hex code, and that's also what happens when I use the Mozc IME with fcitx5. Just garbled mess.

so far, the only Japanese text I was able to read was the Japanese Wikipedia logo because it's based on an image and is not text.

It's what you get if a glyph cannot be resolved - check the webinspector on what font gets computed by css (likely sans-serif) and then run

FC_DEBUG=4 pango-view --font="sans-serif" -t "黒" | grep family:

inspect the rendered glyph and post the output.

also yes a sans-serif font is labled in the inspector, with also Arial and Helvetica, I think I have Arial installed because it's a good Hebrew font

they all belong to the OpenSiddur Hebrew fonts packages I also installed from the AUR, so I should probably remove it and just use another Hebrew font collection...

yea no, I mostly install Open Siddur because it's the first option in the Fonts#Hebrew list, I went and uninstalled it, and got `ttf-ms-fonts` instead.

Is DejaVu another font package?

If there's anything like a linux default font (there technically isn't, but), it's dejavu.
You can also use the nerd font if you want extended glyphs for your terminal (icons etc, https://www.nerdfonts.com/cheat-sheet )
