Issues with Mesa 24.3.x and amdgpu Vega graphics

I'm aware of this other big issue that people were having and it was quickly fixed:

https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=301550

However, there seems to be this other issue with some vega integrated graphics at least where after a while kind of randomly, the applications freeze and you can't even switch to a TTY and you just have to hard reboot, it was happening to me and downgrading to Mesa 24.2.7 fixes it, i've seen on reddit at least another user with the same issue:

https://www.reddit.com/r/archlinux/comm … ng_inputs/

I'm the one that helped the OP, we both have the Ryzen 3200G so it seems there's something going on with Mesa 24.3.x and that Vega integrated video card, i've checked the mesa discussion tracker and i can't seem to find anything about this so i'm not sure if it's only happening with people that have Raven Ridge because i think that Vega is used by a lot of people in laptops so there would probably be a lot more reports.

I couldn't find anything on the logs when it crashed,i'm willing to upgrade to the latest version again until it crashes if it can help debug anything but the journal didn't have any errors at all.

EDIT: For people coming late into this thread, downgrading is no longer a good option because llvm got upgraded in the meanwhile, the best workaround for now is to use the mesa patched from this post, or the downgraded mesa(which is built for the newer llvm) version from that post too:

Re: Issues with Mesa 24.3.x and amdgpu Vega graphics

I also have an AMD APU here with integrated AMD graphics.
Since mesa update to 24.3.1 the system keeps freezing.
Downgrade the packages 'mesa' to 24.2.7-x and 'vulkan-radeon' to 24.2.7-x fixes that problem for now.
Of course this is not a permanent solution.

But the community seems to think the bug has been fixed. KDE users with Wayland were affected. But I have Xfce with X here.

https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=301584

AMD APU users are still affected.

Re: Issues with Mesa 24.3.x and amdgpu Vega graphics

Both those threads were about the same issue that was caused by a change in mesa and was solved by mesa devs.
It only affected wayland (all compositors) and videocards without support for format modifiers (mostly cards older then 2019 ).

There's not much data to go on, but since both of you are using X you clearly have a different issue.

After one of those crashes, reboot and run as root journalctl -b -1 | curl -F 'file=@-' 0x0.st and post the link it outputs .

@Lone_Wolf

At the moment I can't provide this because I have to work on the system now, but on Dec 13 I recorded the following error message (without root and only that excerpt):

I am also experiencing this issue, I also have Ryzen 3200G and I am using X with i3.The issue started when I fully upgraded my packages, and mesa was among them (lib32-mesa (1:24.2.7-1 -> 1:24.3.1-3))

Thank you, Lone_Wolf, here it is:

I was just opening some articles from newsboat in the browser and it crashed, i'll downgrade again just to get some stability but if needed i'll upgrade again to 24.3.

At the moment it's likely there are 3 different issues involved as the symptoms don't match .

Roin & pacmancrashedagain , please start your own threads.
include the output of

$ lspci -k

$ eglinfo -B

if this was with X or wayland and which WM/DE/wayland compositor you were using.

@pacmancrashedagain :
unforuntately the journal has no messages related to the crash, it just stops.

There were many firmware updates released by MSI after 3B0  and several include newer agesa versions which often help stability .

Re: Issues with Mesa 24.3.x and amdgpu Vega graphics

Ok i'll open another thread later with those details and i'll update my firmware but i need to make sure that i have a good usb stick around since this board doesn't have flashback in case something goes wrong.

I was checking the mesa tracker and i found this issue which looks similar:

https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/mesa/mesa/-/issues/12310

Another user with Raven Ridge and i'm using qutebrowser which is also a Chromium derivative, so maybe an issue with Chromium browsers if that's what other people are using too.

New thread created:

Re: Issues with Mesa 24.3.x and amdgpu Vega graphics

As already mentioned, I often had to deal with a freezing system after updating to mesa 24.3.1. The following two further updates slightly extended the duration of the next freeze.
Then I finally downgraded back to 24.2.7 and the system was stable.

I had also thought about updating the BIOS to a newer AGESA version, but I wasn't expecting too much from that as the existing BIOS wasn't particulary old.
Today, on the basis of @Lone_Wolf's recommendation, I carried out the BIOS update and upgraded the AGESA version to 'AGESA ComboAm4v2PI 1.2.0.Ca'.
Then I updated 'mesa' and 'vulkan-radeon' back to the current version.

So far I really don't have a freezing system any more, but I'll keep an eye on and will definitely report whether the situation keeps stable.

I remain skeptical, because if you also need to update the BIOS when updating a package, then the tolerances could be a little tight.

Re: Issues with Mesa 24.3.x and amdgpu Vega graphics

It's unusual to need a bios updates after a package update. However if the package in question interacts on a low level with hardware the possibility of that happening increases by a lot.

Both linux kernel & mesa often enable support for stuff in newer versions that wasn't used at all before.

In case the brakes on your car are defective without your knowledge you won't have any issues until you need to brake .

Re: Issues with Mesa 24.3.x and amdgpu Vega graphics

...as already mentioned, the two mesa updates to 1:24.3.1-2 and 1:24.3.1-3 each extended the time until freezing the system.
The BIOS update to a new AGESA version has significantly extended this period longer again, but did not prevent the system from freezing again, as feared.

Downgrade of 'mesa' and 'vulkan-radeon' performed again. This will remain now until next update of 'mesa'.

Now it remains to be seen whether the BIOS/AGESA update will cause another problem.

Possibly downgrading the firmware and update to the latest mesa to see if still happens.

Re: Issues with Mesa 24.3.x and amdgpu Vega graphics

An update of 'mesa' and 'vulkan-radeon' and a downgrade of 'linux-firmware' due to the previously reported mesa ticket shows that the system freezes again after about 2 hours.

I now finally downgraded the packages 'mesa' and 'vulkan-radeon' and updated 'linux-firmware' again.

At this point I'll stop examining this problem, as the problem is too complex and multi-layered for my level of knowledge.
I'm afraid there will be a lot of fun until this things (mesa and/or linux-firmare and/or AGESA) have been stabilized.

Thanks to the affected users, who reported here and maybe on other sides and thanks to the admin @Lone_Wolf.
My special thanks also to @pacmancrashedagain, who opened this thread.

Re: Issues with Mesa 24.3.x and amdgpu Vega graphics

(also posted here)
Same issue here since mesa 1:24.3.x with a Ryzen5 3400G and good ole Xorg. No Wayland involved (but tested and also crashes after some minutes of work).
The only task that "solved" that issue for now was to downgrade to mesa 1:24.2.7-1
MoBo is an ASRock A300M-STX and no newer FW updates available for years.

Xorg, which includes amdgpu: Dumping IP State

Wayland, no really interesting Kernel things

Re: Issues with Mesa 24.3.x and amdgpu Vega graphics

I had my memory under suspicion but memtest shows no errors.

For now, I am using kde plasma (x11) which does the trick so far here?! . I just tried xfce again and it only took some minutes after the desktop freezes.

---Edit---
It took some hours longer than usual, but I just had a frozen system desktop with plasma (x11). So I may try the mesa downgrade work-around suggested before.

Re: Issues with Mesa 24.3.x and amdgpu Vega graphics

Thanks for the message.
This makes it clear, which was also to be assumed, that at least the AMD Ryzen APU's 'Raven Ridge (zen)' and 'Picasso (zen+) are still affected by the mesa-bug 24.3.x.

There is a bug-fix coming with mesa 24.3.2 (Repo Extra-Testing) and we will see if *this* bug will also be fixed then.

Re: Issues with Mesa 24.3.x and amdgpu Vega graphics

Hello! I don't know if the other thread I replied to is still active.

https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 0#p2215590

I also experienced the same issue weeks ago with no luck fixing it. I clean installed my system to make sure that there are no junk configs remaining. All packages are up to date, but I downgraded mesa and vulkan-radeon to 1:24.2.7-1 and deleted the ~/.cache/mesa_shader_cache folders to regenerate it, but my system still freezes at random times.

Hardware Info
- Motherboard: Gigabyte B450M K -CF
- CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 2400G
- Integrated GPU: Radeon RX Vega 11
- Dedicated GPU: None
- RAM: 16 GB 2400 MHz Dual Channel

Kernel Params: loglevel=3 zswap.enabled=0
DE: GNOME 47.2 Wayland (with extensions)

Packages possibly involved:
* lib32-mesa 1:24.2.7-1
* lib32-vulkan-radeon 1:24.2.7-1
* linux 6.12.4.arch1-1
* linux-firmware 20241210.b00a7f7e-1
* mesa 1:24.2.7-1
* vulkan-radeon 1:24.2.7-1

Re: Issues with Mesa 24.3.x and amdgpu Vega graphics

@four_bits

I saw your posting there but I think you seem to have an additional problem.
Since you seem to have done a fresh install, I would maybe check the hardware. Is the RAM ok and so on...

Regarding the mesa-bug with AMD Ryzen APU's as listed here, I would maybe wait for an update and see if the problem discussed here is solved then.
Your problem will probably remain, but will then be easier to analyze. If so, a separate thread will then be necessary.

Thank you very much for the reply!

I recently upgraded my RAM to 16 GB dual-channel and fully upgraded the packages when that freeze issue happened.
However, I ran Memtest86+ for around 1 and a half hours and it shows that the test passed 2 times with 0 errors.

For the SSD where I installed my Linux on, unfortunately, it has 5 bad sectors.
I don't know if those 5 bad sectors would really make an impact on my installation.
As I check through the logs, I've seen no EXT-4 errors before the mesa bug happened.
I haven't tried installing the same thing on my spare SSD to see if storage is the problem.

Re: Issues with Mesa 24.3.x and amdgpu Vega graphics

@four_bits

The last change was the upgrade of the RAM modules. If no errors occurred before, I would restore the old hardware configuration and test the system for a while.
Also check the modules are correctly seated in the slot.

But as I said: this does not fit thematically into this thread here.

Re: Issues with Mesa 24.3.x and amdgpu Vega graphics

Yes. System update performed 5 minutes ago.
...mesa 24.3.2, Xfce 4.20, Linux LTS 6.6.67...

Release notes of mesa with changelog can be found here:
https://docs.mesa3d.org/relnotes/24.3.2.html

edit 19:10 utc+1
system chrashes like before. Uptime 22 minutes.
Downgrade to mesa 24.2.7

I thought so, but I had to try it. ;-)
As I said, this will take a little longer. Someone will have to write a ticket, otherwise we'll stay with *this* bug...
