ACPI BIOS Errors

Hi all,

Apologies if this moreso belongs in the "Laptop" section on the forum.

I contacted Lenovo about this some time ago. It seemed I was getting somewhere, until they began telling me to have my laptop sent in and repaired, which I was pretty confident would make no difference. After a pretty positive experience on here earlier this week, I thought I'd see if anyone has any knowledge about this:

I have a Thinkpad E16 Gen 2 AMD (21M5). Every time I boot it up, it throws a load of (harmless, I believe?) ACPI errors. This log also includes something about power states. I have noticed pretty high battery drain while the lid is closed. On my last laptop, I could fix this with the /sys/power/sleep [deep] trick, but all I have is [s2idle] on my current laptop.

There's also a few issues with the keyboard. For example, W + E + D does not register. I think sway might have threw a few errors about a keycode 708 and an XF86 keysym that wasn't recognised - something like PrevGrou? I'm not certain, I'll see if I can provide those too at some point. There's also a bizarre issue in that pressing backspace on the numpad twice registers as a held key until I press another key.

So my main issues are:
- The ACPI Errors - are these totally harmless?
- The key ghosting issues with certain keybinds - annoying, but not a huge deal.
- The suspend/power issues - not great, battery usually drops 20-30% overnight.

Would appreciate any thoughts on this!

Re: ACPI BIOS Errors

a load of (harmless, I believe?) ACPI errors

Typically yes.

I have noticed pretty high battery drain while the lid is closed.

Does the system enter s2idle at this point at all?
Please post your complete system journal for the boot:

sudo journalctl -b | curl -F 'file=@-' 0x0.st

W + E + D does not register

Check whether they generate events in

evtest

but on a QWERTY/Z keyboard, that block sound like it's a hardware issue.

pressing backspace on the numpad twice registers as a held key

Same thing. Sound like the key gets stuck. Either mechanically or the electric signal.
You could test the keyboard behavior w/ a live distro like https://grml.org/ to rule out any local kernel/config issues.

If it's a HW thing I'd try to detach the keyboard from the case and see whether it's caused by physical tension - in doubt you'll need a replacement keyboard.

If there're keys stuck, that might also impede the sleep or immediately wake the system.

Regardless of the pot. hardware issues and wrt. "overnight" you'd probably want to opt for a hybrid sleep (is initially s2idle, then s4)

Re: ACPI BIOS Errors

Typically yes.

Good to know, thank you.

Does the system enter s2idle at this point at all?

Unsure - I closed the lid, waited a minute or so, then opened it again before taking this log: https://0x0.st/XCj3.txt
I was reminded of a couple more things in the log:

hub 6-0:1.0: config failed, hub doesn't have any ports! (err -19)

All my USB ports seem to work fine. Maybe this is another harmless error?

Also a load of "duplicate blacklisted hash"

I did attempt to speak to Lenovo support about some of those issues a while ago, but I was met with unhelpful stuff (Use Ubuntu 16.04, reboot etc etc). It would be nice to speak to someone from Lenovo who actually has knowledge of BIOS etc, but I don't think its possible.

If it's a HW thing I'd try to detach the keyboard from the case and see whether it's caused by physical tension - in doubt you'll need a replacement keyboard.

I tried the combos in evtest. W + E is fine, then once D is introduced, no event at all is being logged. I don't think it's a physical jam, if anything I imagine its electrical as you said. Or could it be something BIOS related?
I do wonder if anyone else with the AMD E16 Gen 2 has these issues too, to see if it's a problem with my machine specifically or just all of them.

Regardless of the pot. hardware issues and wrt. "overnight" you'd probably want to opt for a hybrid sleep (is initially s2idle, then s4)

I've had a read about s4 - does that mean I should have at least 64gb swap? (64gb memory on this machine)
