Good night,
I repeatedly encounter the problem that Konqueror is not able to display all the characters, which are used throughout the world wide web. Especially the Asian characters turn out to be non-displayable but on some pages, even umlauts are not working. Konqueror seems to be a bit weak, when it comes to special characters, I assume.
Is there any known fix for this problem, which keeps annoying me?
Thanks in advance

I don't use konqueror but here's a few tips. Do you have the proper (asian) fonts installed? Also, make sure that konqueror use the correct encoding. There's probably an option to set it. Usually, these are the things that cause character display problems with firefox.

Concering the Asian fonts: I am quite sure they are not installed, but what is the proper package called like, if I may ask?

It's ttf-arphic-ukai and/or ttf-arphic-uming. I'm not sure about the difference between them. To get a list of avaliable international fonts: pacman -Ss ttf

i too have this problem but it works fine in _most_ pages, i have this settings (don't know which of them are relevant and which aren't)
LOCALE="en_US.utf8" in rc.conf
LANG=en_US.utf8 variable set with locale-gen
default konqueror encoding set to utf8 which is (oddly) placed in the fonts section
an example of a page that doesn't work correctly in konqueror is
http://javax.mty.itesm.mx/redes1/
it shows squares, firefox shows the right char though

That page displays correctly in konqueror here with bitstream vera fonts.

really? i use bitstream vera also.. did you check Policas y Evaluaci it should read Politicas y Evaluación

I you put in Settings -> Fonts -> for standard font Sans Serif for example (I have it) you will have less problem. I have still problem but less. IMO Japanese fonts doesn't works also some other too. Try to check on www.debian.org. They have many different languages.

I have installed ttf-kochi-substitute from AUR and set Kochi Monchi and Kochi Gothic as substitutes to Dejavu Sans (my default font) in qtconfig. That way I still have to stumble upon characters that aren't displayed.

That displays fine. I use en_US as LOCALE and LANG. Try different encodings like the Western (ISO-8859-1) one. Thats the one I use.

yeah it works fine with iso8859-1, but isn't it supposed to be compatible with iso?

I don't know. I usually use Western and it works. You could try the automatic detection for the encodings if Western doesn't work for some pages.

I haven't followed any of the suggestions in this thread so far, but this page is displayed correctly.

@chaosgeisterchen
yes, it works fine using iso-8859-1 kde's default setting

I installed the former but Konqueror is still not displaying the Japanese characters. I guess there are several steps to be taken beyond merely installing a bunch of fonts?

I am able to grab the fonts here [1], but I haven't got the splinter of an idea how to install a package from AUR. It's quite a shame to admit that, but I have not found a guide how to do so. Maybe I am struck with blindness, but at the moment I can't tell how to follow your steps without being capable of installing a PKGBUILD.

If the page doesn't show the characters properly it is not browser's fault. It is the developers fault:
header information:
Server: Apache-Coyote/1.1
Etag: W/"1579-1172081082000"
Last-Modified: Wed, 21 Feb 2007 18:04:42 GMT
Content-Type: text/html
Content-Length: 1579
Date: Sun, 25 Feb 2007 12:15:25 GMT
200 OK
head information:
<head>
<link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="redes1.css"/>
<title> Redes 1 </title>
</head>
As you see, there no place where it says ISO-8859-1 or ISO-8859-15.
It is a misconfiguration of the developer. Set your KDE default encoding to ISO-9959-15 and the page http://javax.mty.itesm.mx/redes1/ will probably work well, because then konqueror will asume ISO-8859-15 as default.
What i do in this cases is contact the developers and tell them that they have to setup the encoding.
Tell them that setting the charset information in the html head works for firefox, internet explorer and opera, but that safari and konqueror need the charset information in the HTTP response header.
I would also recommend them to use unicode, since this way the page works internationally.

Look here (it's linked on a main page of AUR).
Also, I think you don't necessarily need kochi, arphic (mentioned by Snowman) should work as well.

The Chinese/Japanese fonts are now properly displayed, but there is still a problem with konqueror, conerning certain letters, like the o with a diagonal line above it, oftenly used in the Japanese language, when displayed in arabic letters. This letter is not displayed at all, instead I see the already well-known rectangle, a substitute for non-recognized letters.
Any suggestions how to solve this problem?

This is a very good page I found about m17n. It should solve your problems.

Are you using Dejavu as your default font?
