External display flickering that resolves when a game is running?

Hey everyone, this one has me scratching my head. I recently picked up a new laptop with an intel core ultra 5 125h and the iris xe igpu. For some reason, connecting an external monitor via hdmi works, but the monitor will flicker black at irregular intervals. The weird part is, the issue goes away completely if I open any games, and resumes once the game's closed. The flickering also doesn't happen in tty for some reason.

I've tried the i915 driver (with and without psr enabled) and the experimental Xe driver to no avail. I've also had no luck disabling aspm, and the issue persists at every resolution and refresh rate. I've ruled out a bad cable/port since the issue resolves itself when a game is open.

I can grab logs and attach them a little later today if needed. Anyone know what might be causing this?

We need more information about your setup. KDE? Wayland?

Does your desktop have some sort of "variable refresh rate" setting?

Sorry, forgot to mention that. I'm running river wm on wayland (wlroots), which to my knowledge doesn't have any such setting. My understanding was that intel doesn't currently support VRR anyway, but I could be wrong.
