Openoffice can only save files as root! Very weird behaviour

I have openoffice2 installed according to the wiki. Everything works fine if i run it as root. When i run it as user it starts fine, i can do everything except save my files. No format works. It  just hangs forever.
What could be the problem?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Check the permissions of the files and directories in your ~/.openoffice.org2 directory.

I had a similar problem when I installed openoffice-base recently.
I had to change the permissions of the ,openoffice.org2 folder to even start it.
