so I have a USB thumb drive whose contents I wanted to swap to a smaller one...
I used GUI to copy/paste folders and files, all at once, into my home Documents folder
this worked fine.
then I used GUI to copy/paste those from home Documents folder onto the new USB thumb drive
this appeared to work, but on closer inspection- all files opened as an empty text document.
the total size of the contents of main folder was reported as correct however.
I then used cp -R in the terminal, and all files were copied successfully with the same size reported as before.
for experimentation - I tried this again on yet another USB thumb drive with the same results.
both operations (via GUI and CLI) appeared to take roughly the same time.
Im stumped as to why this is a one-directional problem that appears to -almost- work, but fails.
edit - im using cinnimon desktop
still learning.
thanks for any input you might have!

And what is "GUI"? nemo?
If after copying the files with "GUI" you run "sudo sync", does that finish immediately or take a while? What do the files look afterward and how did you inspect/open them? "cat" or GUI² editor?
