gnome software firmware update

Hi all,

is it possible to have updates for ssd and firmware with gnome software on arch even though I never configure it ?

It is the first time I have this.

Is it using fwupd on its own ?

Thanks

Re: gnome software firmware update

Now now, I'm im correct, only beginner friendly distros update drivers for you, what i'm saying is that in beginner friendly distros, you can just click on a single button and update drivers without typing,

However, Arch Linux is not a beginner friendly distro, more so much as gentoo but it is easier with archinstall being here, so you have to update drivers by typing in the console/tty session, this also applies to gentoo, althought it is easier with arch linux

and i actually don't think gnome software updates drivers because i only use it for flatpaks (and only for flatpaks)

only beginner friendly distros do that, so i can see why you asked the forum this question.

In arch linux, just search for drivers in either packages or in AUR (they are the same, but AUR requires more steps)

and then add the driver package's name after "pacman -S" something like this:

pacman -S nvidia

this also works for all drivers, so for any drivers you want to install, just take the example and replace nvidia with something else (as look, if you are looking for drivers, it has to be a driver)

I might be wrong but hey it works

Programing in Linux Shell
The Reasons I Use Arch (.sh script) (Yandex Disk Backup) GitHub Repo (open code) and yes I took down all but expect Yandex Disk as a permanent backup

Re: gnome software firmware update

arch wiki wrote:

GNOME Software — Will check for updates periodically and automatically download firmwares in the background on GNOME. After a firmware has been downloaded a popup will be displayed in Gnome Software to perform the update. Part of gnome.

That's from the article in the wiki on fwupd.

I am not using Gnome myself, but fwupd doesn't really require any configuration, so it is very much possible that gnome-software will just use it on its own without you needing to do anything.

And this has nothing to do with what kind of distro Arch is, or with drivers.

Re: gnome software firmware update

gnome software and gnome firmware use fwupd under the hood, so yes... you could theoretically update the firmware for your ssd using gnome software, but in reality most manufacturers don't care enough yet to provide the firmware to the lvfs. for example samsung doesn't provide the firmware for their storage devices to the lvfs and you need to update the firmware manually

Re: gnome software firmware update

Hi there,

thank you for your answers.

I read afterward the arch wiki about fwupd and, indeed, gnome software use it on its own. So it is totally normal.
