[SOLVED] User selection and password field not showing in gdm

After the latest updates from Gnome-Unstable (48alpha to 48beta)

gnome-shell mutter gnome-settings-daemon gsettings-system-schemas gsettings-desktop-schemas

gdm does not reach the user selection and password entry field. gdm shows a gray screen, but all the buttons on the top panel work, i.e. gdm is not frozen. If I run gnome-session from tty

XDG_SESSION_TYPE=wayland dbus-run-session gnome-session

it runs.

What does the system journal have to say when this occurs?

Gnome shell landed https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-sh … uests/3558 in the beta, but the corresponding GDM change may be required:

This is just a hunch as I'm not doing alpha/beta testing this cycle.

My suggestion would be to build your GDM package locally from git main and see if that works.

Yes, before digging into logs, I tried gdm-git. And it works great!

I wonder when the new version of gdm will be released. And maybe it makes sense to apply a patch to the current version until then? After all, if I understand correctly, gdm will break for everyone who updates to gnome-shell 48beta.

Sounds like it was the missing commit I'd pointed to.

If you look at GDM's git commit history there's been nearly zero development this cycle so, it might have been easy to miss.

GDM maintainers have not tagged alpha/beta releases, nor branched for 48.

Regarding the Arch packaging side of things, yeah they should have picked this up...oops. As you noted, the breakage should be noticed by more folks soon.

Also, based on previous anecdotal experience, GDM seems to get packaged later in the cycle.

EDIT: You could crack a ticket open on Arch GitLab for the GDM package detailing this breakage.
