Can't start Gnome on Xorg from GDM after recent update

Since updating GNOME, I'm unable to start a GNOME session with Xorg.  The login process fails after entering my password in GDM: the screen flashes black momentarily, but instead of loading GNOME, I'm presented with the GDM login screen again. Gnome with Wayland works fine. However, I prefer to continue using Xorg due to its better multi-display support with my mixed-resolution setup.

I'm not sure what logs are relevant but hopefully those are useful for resolving the issue:
